Korimako Posted August 21, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2023 How do I (solo elderly female) get to the airport from OPT by public transport? What does it cost and how would I pay? Thank you.
Rare cruiser3775 Posted August 21, 2023 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2023 You get off the ship, walk to Circular Quay. This is a five minute, or less, walk, perfectly flat, and there are bench seats all along it, so you can rest if you need to. At Circular Quay, use your credit card to tap on at the railway station entrance, then take the lift up to the platform. Take the train to the airport. It stops at both the domestic and the international terminals, so make sure you get off at the international terminal, because you can't walk between them. Tap off with the same credit card. The train is easy with luggage, because there are no steps to get on, and there is an area just inside the doors with seats and space to put your luggage next to you. Here's the cost information: https://airportlink.com.au/trip-information/price/

But not to scare people, 3/4 of that price is the (stupid and unavoidable) "station access fee" at both, international and domestic terminals. Usually public transport isn't that expensive. To use our public transport (train, tram, bus, ferry) you can use a stored value card called "Opal card" or a credit card. To get through access gates or on buses you touch your card on a card-reader (just do as others do) to get on AND OFF(!!!) the relevant mode of transport. The fare will automatically charged to the card you used. It is important to use the same card getting on and off. Rare lyndarra Posted August 22, 2023 #10 Share Posted August 22, 2023 If you are a senior who would normally qualify for the Opal discount, how would the card reader know this if you want to use a credit card?

You can’t get the senior discount with a credit card. You do get the daily cap though. To get the senior Opel you have to apply for one and they post it out, you can’t get them from a convenience store.

I just wondered if the CC could do it so that I don't have to worry about doing top-ups.
