Vaccines?

Which vaccines, if any do you usually get for your travels to SA. We are going to be circumnavigate the continent, calling in Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and French Guiana plus go into the Amazon. We are too old for the yellow fever vaccine, considering the Typhoid. Do you bring just in case medicines and if so which ones?

I realize you are not doctors (or maybe you are) just asking for your experience.

We did not get yellow fever due to age and we did not carry malaria meds.  Wore lightweight long sleeved shirts and pants and sprayed with a Deep Woods insect repellent.  Typhoid is water borne so never drank water, ice cubes and never ate at local markets or kiosks - only nice hotel and on ship.  Had all Covid vax and boosters available.  Yes people on ship were still getting Covid in Feb-Mar 2023.  Already had hepatitis and tetanus shots.  Traveled Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, up the Amazon to Manaus on a cruise ship followed by a week on a smaller river boat further up the Amazon and 2 days in Manaus.  Only saw mosquitoes once and it was on a dense forest hike.

 

We each need to research what is best for ourselves based on what we plan to do.  We chose a river boat to go further up the Amazon rather then a land based rainforest lodge figuring a lodge surrounded by dense forest would have more mosquitoes.

You may want to visit the state department website, www.state.gov. 

 

Click the "Travelers" tab at the top of the page, then click the "Countries and Areas" tab just below it.  From there, scroll down to the different sections of the world and click on "western hemisphere."  From there you can click a link for each country you will visit, and then "international travel information" and it will tell you if any vaccines are required, and further down will have a "health" tab that provides other health precautions that are recommended etc.

One thing to note is that sometimes a country may not require, say, a yellow fever vaccine for instance, if a traveler is coming directly from certain countries, but will require it if you first visit certain other countries.  We encountered this in Africa.   Rwanda didn't require it, and Tanzania didn't require it if we came from the US, but if we were entering Tanzania from Rwanda, which we were, it was required even thought Rwanda itself didn't require it.

 

Beyond vaccines, anytime we travel to a 3rd world country we get a prescription for Ciproflaxin or similar for possible gastrointestinal issues.

What is the age range for the Yellow Fever vaccine?

Without precautions, according to the CDC below 60. Not sure minimum age

We are travelling up the Amazon over Christmas and then visiting several Caribbean countries on our way back to Miami. Researching the requirements of the Caribbean countries we will visit, it seems we will need YF vaccination certificates to go into Dominica and Bahamas because we have been to Brazil. We are in our 70's and don't want to get the vaccine. Will we be denied embarkation on our cruise or just not allowed to go ashore in the two ports?

 

Any advice will be appreciated.

We are facing a similar situation with different countries. We are looking into a YF waiver. I am not sure at all how that works, however, I have read of them being available in Great Briton so hoping something similar in US. If you learn anything please share and I will do the same.
