And like a working person being asked to dine with a customer, I suspect that however graciously he/she carries it off, the crew member considers accepting this “invitation” to dine with a passenger as a duty. Once on a cruise (HAL) a person from the Guest Services came to sat with us at dinner. We had a pleasant chat and she apparently enjoyed our company, but she did let slip at one point that she hadn’t realized she would be “working” that evening. Rereading my post it occurs to me it may not be clear that we had not specifically asked the Guest Services person to dinner. We were three at a 4-top, and she came over and asked if she could join us, apparently something the staff were directed to take turns doing, to mingle with passengers. Many service workers rely on tips but lately the "outreach" efforts in some restaurants and take out spots are over the top! cruise ships make it easy to auto tip and add where needed..at the bar, ladies rm for a clean towel, someone who goes out of the way to help! I have tipped restroom attendants but not for a while. Is mopping the floor. Tip? Hands you a towel. Tip? Says good evening to you. Tip?

So now I have to tip these people AND feed them too? 😂 Seriously though, that was nice of you.

dazey Posted October 22, 2023 #80 Share Posted October 22, 2023 I do have a pet peeve with always being asked when checking out at various local stores(CVS, JobLot, Stop & Shop, etc.) if I want to round up to make a donation even before I know how much my payment it. Also the last straw was being asked if I wanted to leave my change to a charity at the local casino(Mohegan Sun) when cashing a slip. They do not even say which one. I do tip service people especially on Celebrity so I am not opposed to leaving a gratuity. However, I think this whole idea of making one feel they need to give money either as a gratuity or donation is out of hand. There was an incident a year or so ago when CVS asked for donation for a certain foundation and they used the money their customers gave to offset the donation CVS had pledged. Believe this has stopped but made me think how this whole issue is not right. Tipping on Celebrity: Always to room steward, to servers who are very good and bartenders who are attentive. No problem showing our appreciation of good service. Just think we should make our own decision. PS Sometimes restaurant adds 18% for gratuity automatically which is less than what we leave. Not sure what we would do if service was awful. Have not had that happen yet.

First we are very gracious tippers They work hard, long hours and yes they do it by choice. So the only way to do something that they enjoy for themselves is to give them something other than case, gift certificate to the spa or restaurant or take them to dinner. In my earlier post I said we went to their manager, what I didnt say is we talk with them first to make sure they would like to go to dinner. Most say yes, 1 was worried that other crew members would be jealous and give them grief so we did something different for him. Some on mentioned that some other crew member might have to cover for them, when we take them to dinner we do it when they are off work so no one else is impacted. The one time we took our butler another butler did cover for him, but butlers do that all the time.

In fact, I believe a CCer was banned from Celebrity for something like that, but, I could be wrong. With their managers approval they are allowed. They are not breaking any rules by joining us for dinner

So are you carrying around cash for such an occasion ? Yes, I always have CASH on me when out and about on a cruise ship. Not a wallet, just folding money..usually ones and fives.
