wallets on excursions?

Here is a question for the guys - do you carry your wallet with you when you leave the ship? My DH says he'd rather have his DL, money, etc. with him in his wallet rather than leave it on the ship - not certain that he trusts the room safes. What do you think? Do you guys agree? (I think he'd be taking a risk keeping his wallet in his back pocket on excursions). Thanks for your help!

I personally like to take my drivers license and some cash with me whenever I leave the ship. There are many options. His best bet would be a fanny pack. They also sell waterproof cases on lanyards that go around your neck (They are large enough to carry money, drivers licence, etc.) If he does choose to carry a wallet, be sure to put a rubberband around it before putting it in his pocket. This causes friction, making the wallet less likely to be lost or pickpocketed.

He should NEVER carry his wallet in his back pocket...carying it in a side pocket with a rubberband as the OP suggested is still iffy, but never ever in the back pocket. If he has cargo pants or ones with an inside zipper that would be even better.Carry cash just needed for the day as well.Safes are pretty safe on ships.I have seen to many men lose their wallets and wonder why.

I like the waterproof cases that go around your neck. I bring my credit card, DL, boat id card, some cash for the day and the rest stays in my safe on the boat. They are also great for swimming and snorkeling if you can find one that has a good watertight seal.

It really depends where we go.

If I am concerned about the port, I carry one of those wallets with me that goes around my neck and underneath my shirt. In that case, I take some money, cruise card, drivers license, and one credit card.

In other ports where I am less concerned, I will carry my wallet, but I will be sure to carry it in my front pocket. But, I don't take much money with me leaving most of it in the safe back on the ship.

I take a different wallet with me on cruises. Minimal items in it. Yes you need cash, id etc. Tell him to carry it in his front pocket and I've heard put a large rubber band around it so it can't be slipped out of the pocket too easily. A friend of mine was in a casino in Aruba and discovered a strange hand in his pocket, the rubber band gave the wallet more friction so it was more noticable when being removed.

No wallet for me when I am off the ship. I use a fabric-type neck pouch that lies comfortably under my shirt and has a zippered and a velco-fastened compartment.

If the individual is uncomfortable concerning the safety of the in-stateroom safes, remember that safe deposit boxes can be obtained at the Front Office (Purser's Office) for no charge. Don't delay in obtaining one, if you want one. There are usually only a limited number.

another option can be found at http://www.magellan.com. they have some fabric wallets with a belt loop that you can slide over your belt and then slip the wallet down inside the front of your pants. Slips back out easily when you need it.. For the gals, it comes with a large safety pin so you could attach it inside a skirt or shorts/slacks if you don't use a belt. magellan also sells the waterproof round your neck things for going in the water. Good source overall for travel gear

I agree with all the suggestions posted. Tell him that if you looked into it, the number of people who have had their wallets either lost or stolen while ashore would be far more than the number who had anything taken from their room safes.
