Generator515 Posted November 18, 2023 #1 Share Posted November 18, 2023 Will be on the Ruby Princess this July and stopping in Ketchikan. Wondering if any recommendations on best excursion with a 9 and 5 year old? Right now have the Bering Sea crab tour booked but wondering how they’d take it with everything being planted and the plastic crabs and being mostly stories. As such seeking some alternative ideas. one I saw was rainforest eagle and totem walk.
SomewhereGirl Posted November 18, 2023 #2 Share Posted November 18, 2023 Plastic crabs? Unless it's changed over the years, we did get to touch live (but planted) creatures, like an octopus and a huge king crab. The eagles were very cool as well. I think kids would enjoy that. Generator515 Posted November 19, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted November 19, 2023 Had read that plastic king crabs are pulled up in the trap (memorial trap) though a real one is in the tank on board (plus other items)

After all of the other live crabs, octopi, and fish are retrieved from the traps and then returned to the water, there is a memorial trap for those who lost their lives fishing in the Bering Sea. The live contents of the traps are displayed and are available for handling before return to the water. On each of my five times on this excursion, the contents of all of the traps, except for the memorial trap, were alive. Some of the fish found inside the traps are kept for baiting the traps. The kids will enjoy seeing the sea creatures up close as well as the eagle feeding.
