Let's talk shopping in Norway to get AUTHENTIC souvenirs and good prices

Recommended Posts

Seeing some travel websites warn about China produced materials and that labeling can be deceptive.  Where can we shop in Flamm, Geiranger, Alesund and Kristiansaand to get real Norwegian items? Other tips about what to watch for? Shops that are the best? Lots of times as you come into a port town there is a gauntlet of shops and stores (all advertising they have the best deals, of course). Where have you been that you would go back to and that we should definitely visit for good prices and authentic souvenirs?

For “authentic” kitsch, anything with the Marius pattern is pretty authentic, since the pattern is actually copyrighted and anyone actually selling it (rather than knitting it themself) needs the rights.

Dale of Norway sweaters are a popular locally produced souvenir and can be found in a lot of souvenir shops.

Personally, I think your best bet for stores are supermarkets and sporting goods shops. Freia chocolate, brown cheese, black licorice, and lefse snacks are my typical go-tos, and for more expensive items, Norway has plenty of great outdoor brands - Helly Hansen, Nørrona, Bergans, Devold… Some of them are designed in Norway but manufactured elsewhere. However with Norwegian labor costs, most locals are fine with the compromise.

In Flam there is  teepee type shop where you can purchase items made by the Sami people. Some lovely items but very expensive. All can be paid by credit card

Google says it is permanently closed.  Sad face!
