DbPA Posted April 16 #1 Share Posted April 16 Why are the cruises to Japan only 4 or 5 days RT to Shanghai? Rather than longer cruises.

There are a few 8 nights dotted around the schedule and a good looking 7 night which goes to Yokohama (Tokyo), Kyoto and Osaka which we are looking at. Ashland Posted April 16 #4 Share Posted April 16 We loved our RCI cruise that went from Singapore to Shanghai with some great ports. That was a few years ago and I wish they would offer that some day again.
vwlmember Posted April 17 #5 Share Posted April 17 I just booked an 8-night on the Spectrum in April '26 out of Shanghai. Price was very reasonable for an aft verandah. Not looking forward to the long flight to get there from Boston.

Yes the same reason we are looking into Spectrum from Shanghai, the prices are very reasonable.
snaefell Posted April 17 #7 Share Posted April 17 I know Quantum was based out there in 2019 for 6 months or so doing mainly short cruises aimed at the Chinese to convince them how wonderful cruising was,if I remember correctly many Chinese used the short trips to Japan as shopping trips. There were some negative reviews from 'Westerners' on these forums about the cruises as they were too Chinese, including, shockingly & surprise,surprise....Chinese food! ARandomTraveler Posted April 18 #8 Share Posted April 18 I did a cruise on Spectrum in August that left from Singapore and ended in Japan. It was 12 days. I think they only did that longer route a handful of times before moving back to China for the shorter cruises. It seems like there's a big draw for gambling on the Asian cruises, so maybe those 5 day routes are conducive to the Asian gambling market moreso than the US/Europe/Canadian market for longer tourism routes. Not sure, but I really enjoyed the 12 day.

Quantum had here casino extended for her time in China so obviously the Chinese like their gambling!😎😎
Raddo Posted April 18 #10 Share Posted April 18 I have booked a 7 nights Japan cruise sailing from Shanghai for March 2026 and did well to secure myself a solo balcony cabin in the process. Sure the ship is geared to the Asian market but the food does have its western choices!!
snaefell Posted April 21 #11 Share Posted April 21 Sure you will love it,China is an amazing place, our visit was spoiled to some degree by problems at Immigration on the day we arrived, never did find out what that was all about or if it was a one off, certainly made us think twice about going back...shame. Brandis Posted May 3 #14 Share Posted May 3 We did Spectrum in 2019 on the first "longer" (7 nights) cruise to Japan. We got huge Junior suites in the aft, called Silver Suites. The main dining room food was pretty boring and had not much variety. We got a laminated piece of paper as menu, with pictures of the menu items. Service was really rushed, I guess the Chinese don't like to linger at dinner. We were done in less than an hour. Luckily, we were able to use the Silver Dining Room (Solarium Bistro on Non-China cruises), there the food was really good. The food in the Windjammer was also pretty good. I really liked the Tea House, they had some pretty unique things. After dinner, the ship felt pretty empty, mostly only Westeners around. Before the cruise I read that the Chinese are big on gambling and that the casino was extended because of this and even a separate highroller casino, but the casions were pretty dead all cruise long.
