Currency exchange question

We have never been to Europe before. I have been told that the best way to exchange currency is to use your credit card or a debit card with a pin number in the ATM machines, expecially good for places that accept the euro. Also I have been told that many places in Europe don't take Travelers Cheques, and many places take VISA/Mastercard.
