One more question if I may. Are there any formal nights, or is my wearing of a nice polo shirt and dockers every night acceptable?

No formal nights. Polos and slacks are the uniform of the day.

On its list of things that Viking is NOT, they make a point of mentioning "no formal nights".

On our two river cruises with Viking I have worn polos/button-downs and chinos every night, and will do the same when we do Viking Alaska next June.
