George and Pam here-we are Sailing May 3-May 17, is there anything to see at the port of Crete or do you need to transport to a town?  Shore excursions do not appear to have rave reviews.

Hello @Ismerelda

Thank you for your new thread. However, it was posted on an incorrect forum and was off topic there. To help you out, your inquiry has been moved to the Ports of Call - Greece Ports forum where it will be on topic. The majority of your fellow Cruise Critic members that have been there frequent this forum and provide feedback here. Browse through the thread titles on this forum looking for threads of interest. You may find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

The Cruise Critic website and message boards are both great resources for new as well as experienced cruisers. Please feel free to browse the Cruise Critic Community categories list of the various forums. I suggest you put the link to the page in your browser's Favorites for quick & easy access in the future. Please read a few threads in the different forums to get a feel for what each forum is about. Make sure you read any pinned threads (aka stickies) on the top of the first page of threads in most forums. You will find very important instructions or information there.

Hope this will be helpful and glad to have you aboard Cruise Critic!

Happy sails,

Host Kat

Crete is a very large island with many ports.  Which one? Chania, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos?

I have no idea. This is our first time to Crete. In reading shore excursion details itt sounds as if Chania and Heraklion are reached by transport if that is helpful.

Any suggestion for Heraklion besides Knossos Palace?

Reading past threads might throw up a few ideas and/or suggestions.  Giving you past threads for both Heraklion and Chania hoping that one will be the port which either, or both of you, will be porting in.  Choose from these

Chania

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/search/?q=chania&quick=1&type=forums_topic&nodes=463

Heraklion

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/search/?q=heraklion&quick=1&type=forums_topic&nodes=463

And looking at shorex should throw up some ideas even should you not want to book one, also the usual websites such as "(name of town) Tourist Information", Tripadvisor, Youtube, Frommer's, Fodors, Rick Steves and any others which appear in your online searches.  And if you have not already done so, join any Roll Call for your sailing and ask what others are doing. A fellow passengers may even have arranged a private tour and is looking for others to join them.

Those two ports are two hours appart by road. Your cruise information should show the name of the port as Crete (Chania) or Crete (Heraklion) or something similar.  Look at your cruise website. It should also show you a map with the itinerary.  It would be useful for you to know since you want to go sightseeing to places near your actual port. Plenty to see at both.  Follow the hints in @edinburgher's post above for info.
