Auckland for active travelers

I would suggest catching a ferry across to the village of Devonport where there are plenty of walking trails, beaches and outdoor activities. You could walk from the Devonport ferry terminal to the summit of North Head/Maungauika which has some amazing views of Auckland.

Auckland Zoo is lovely, public transport there is easy to use.  Not hiking but quite hilly so you do feel like you are exercising.

Our favourite short walk in Auckland is around Panmure Basin. Well - you used to be able to do a circuit, but at the moment the bridge is closed for repairs, so you have to walk around and then return the same way.  If the tide is out the bird life is great. Last time we were there we saw dozens of kotare (the native kingfisher).

You can get there using the train to Panmure, then the basin is a short walk from the station. Bus would be another option. Note that you need an AT HOP card to use public transport in Auckland. 

 

Another favourite walk of ours in Auckland is around Westhaven Marina. No public transport required from the cruise pier. Takes about 90 minutes return, or longer, depending how far you go.

 

If you google "Auckland Council walks"  that will give you lots of walking options.
