Prebook taxi vs taxi stand Rome airport to Civitavecchia port

When I look at pre-booking private transfer from Rome airport (Fiumicino) to the Civitavecchia port, the prices are around 200€ for 2 and the transfer takes 1,5 hrs. Yet, according to RomeToRio.com, a taxi is 100-130€, taking 50 minutes. Perhaps August prices are different? Is it silly to think we can just grab a taxi outside the airport?

First of all, Rome2Rio is a questionable source, sometimes wrong information, often incomplete.  Use it only as a starting point and never rely on what you find there without backing it up with official sites.

In this case, the official site is the city of Rome's web site.  The fixed fare for a trip from Fiumicino airport to the port at Civitavecchia is 125 euro:  Tariffario_Taxi_REV.pdf (comune.roma.it)  As noted in the link, this amount is all inclusive, regardless of what a driver may try to tell you.  Also note that this only applies to taxis licensed in Rome, those licensed in Fiumicino are not obligated to offer these fares.  When in the taxi line, be sure to verify the taxi license (on the side of the car).

You can get a taxi from the line at the airport but be prepared to wait.  That's the tradeoff with a pre-arranged car service, which leaves when you are ready to go.

The drawback to a pre-arranged service is you have to walk to a somewhat remote lot.

Not an issue unless you're mobility challenged or have lots of luggage.

At FCO? Since when? That didn't happen for us...the driver met us outside Customs.  Yes, he needed about 5 minutes to get the car, but we waited at the curb.

Anyone shared a cab from FCO?….2 couples and luggage?…. Curbside not prearranged?

Not many standard cabs are going to be able to handle 4 people plus luggage.

It’s fair to say that no standard cabs could handle it….I’m wondering if anyone has seen minivan type options there?

Since November, 2022 when our driver had us walk about five minutes to a remote lot.

Maybe that was a one-off...but that's our experience.

Depends on the driver and you.  Most drivers ask you if you want to walk or wait while they go get the car.  It is like that at many airports around the world.

This is taken directly from Rome in Limo's site. They are one of the largest and most popular private transport companies in Rome. Sounds like it's their policy in all cases:

Note for FCO passengers: as the traffic is limited to the arrival at FCO airport, there will be a 5 minutes walk from your arrival terminal to the parking where the vehicle is located.
