We saw the QM2 left NYC today and wished it God Speed.

But before going to bed happen to want see where she was...

Starting to Head out to Sea past Long Island - Montauk.

But noticed she dropped to 10 knts from a previous 19.5.

Hope all is well on board with engineering and passengers.

Will monitor it for a while longer.

Captain before departure announced after dark we had a 60nm passage at a mandatory 10kts due to recent sightings of a pod of a rare species of whale seen in the area

Let's hope there's not a third incident, having said that, apparently the whales are a feature of other transatlantic voyages recently. The medivac was announced at noon/1pm as that is when we lose today's hour, and completely concluded 95 minutes later with patient being transferred to Boston.

Currently back on course doing 23 knots. Sea is dead calm and both air and sea temperature are steady at 23C

Thanks for the updates @new to cuising, I hope you're enjoying your crossing.

Going well. One minor observation which someone else may have picked up on concerns afternoon tea in the Queen's Room. The "signature afternoon tea served by white gloved waiters" no longer features gloves!

We normally experience the whales slowdown coming down from Boston along Cape Cod from New England to the Big Apple in July.

We also run 9.9 knots for most of the day.

Those are "seasonal management areas", which are basically "permanent" every season (Mar - July) in the shipping lanes off Cape Cod.  What they are experiencing now, on the shipping lanes south of Long Island are "whale slow zones", which are voluntary, but generally adhered to, that crop up when whales are spotted in the area.  Those affecting QM2, in the east/west lanes south of Long Island are due to expire Monday.

The ship observed the speed restriction Thursday on approaching the US, only to be overtaken by a poxy cargo ship.

Any intel from onboard if the second gas turbine that had been removed from the ship for servicing has been reinstalled?  On my early July crossing, one of the ship’s officers told me that it was due to be reinstalled in August.
