racingraysswimmom Posted October 11 #1 Share Posted October 11 Royal Caribbean announced they will build a new private destination for guests called Perfect Day Mexico. To do this, they’ve acquired the port of Costa Maya and will transform it into a private destination for Royal Caribbean guests. Royal Caribbean is purchasing the port, as well as additional areas surrounding the space. In total, Perfect Day Mexico will take up over 220 acres, although a portion of the space will be dedicated to ecological preservation. Other cruise lines have not yet commented if they plan to visit the port now that it is owned by Royal Caribbean. This will open in 2027.
Rare talkorpi Posted October 11 #2 Share Posted October 11 It's hard to say what NCL plans to do. Royal has expressly stated that this will not change the berthing agreements with other cruise lines, past, present, and future. However, once the port is built out, only Royal Caribbean Corp-owned ships can use any amenities. I doubt cruise lines would want to sail to a port where the guests have to debark walking by a giant waterslide tower, beach, hot air balloon, etc. without being able to use any of it. It's too early to tell since 2027 Caribbean schedules aren't out yet for any line - just my two cents.
Rare wolft927 Posted October 11 #3 Share Posted October 11 If I were ncl I would simply drop costa Maya as a port. In my opinion it’s a garbage port outside the actual pier and pool area

From what I've seen and read, they didn't buy the entire port complex. They have purchased the 220 acres adjacent to the port and will create Perfect Day there with their own excursion pickup/drop-off area as part of their private enclave. The port itself will still be open to all companies. This is more similar to what RCCL does in Nassau with building their private beach club on Paradise Island. Travelling2Some Posted October 12 #5 Share Posted October 12 (edited) I have been wondering if cruise lines will soon buy private islands off the west coast of Mexico in response to the problems cartel violence is creating on the mainland. I know nothing specific about that, just personal speculation. However, given that some Mexican, Latin American and Caribbean ports are pretty unstable, it would seem to solve a problem while also generating more revenue for the cruise lines. If I was in charge (and I'm not, lol) that is something I would be looking into merely from a practical standpoint. Personally, I would not like that trend at all but I think it would suit many cruisers who just want a nice, clean, peaceful beach. Curious what others think. CruiseMH Posted October 12 #6 Share Posted October 12 If RCCL really bouth also the port itself then for sure no NCL ship will ever dock there again. Because even if they were allowed to they would for sure not pay the port fees to their competitor.
JSar Posted October 13 #7 Share Posted October 13 I don't know... but one of my planned cruises is SUPPOSED to go there... but not until early 2026. Guess we shall see...

Right, we went to a beach once and it was horrible. Only Caribbean ports we get of at now is Cozumel, and Harvest Cay. Rather enjoy an empty ship then most ports of call

detroitlions Posted October 15 #13 Share Posted October 15 I was thinking they should stop going to this stop and a few others. I have done all the Caribbean stops this was one I started not getting off the ship for.

Before going to some ports, we will order 2 beers per person and few times and stock them in our Fridge, we bring a cooler bag and ask our butler for ice and pack some beers to bring ashore. I know some will say I am breaking the rules, but like you said, kills me to spend $9 or more for a beer in some places.

Just MHO, of course, but I think if you really look at it, there is an issue deeper than breaking the rules. You bring a cooler bag and ask for ice because the thought of spending $9 for a beer while on vacation "kills" you...yet you are getting the needed ice from your BUTLER. I can't seem to get around the disconnect here. How does a $9 beer cause you to drop into "frugal mode" yet you happily bypass ways to save far more money by choosing a cabin that does not come with a butler.

I can totally understand your point lol! I guess I have no issue spending the money on Haven Cabins simply because I think the Value is there. As far as the beer goes, maybe that is just my issue lol. Again, its only for beer lol if we go to a public beach or something like that. Guess it just me lol

There is one port with a nice all-inclusive resort where I like to go, sit on the beach, and all the drinks are included. As much as I love the place it still kind of bothers me to pay for it knowing that I could save the entire cost of the resort and stay on the ship where I could drink for FREE. I just thought the juxtaposition of the "killer" $9 beer in a world where butlers operate was worth a chuckle!

Its funny though, we always tip our Butler immediately $100 when we meet him, then another $100 at the end as long as they were decent. Could you imagine asking him for ice because I don't want to pay for beer ashore if we never tipped already...they would be like look at these cheap asses lol

We have been going to Maya Chan for years, and enjoy the family that owns it. I guess nothing is forever, and maybe they might be ready to retire Maya Chan, but I don’t want to see them forced in to it.
