Getting into and out of bed ideas

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I’ll be cruising with my family on the Celebrity Equinox in January. At home, my mom uses a small step stool with a handle to get in and out of the bed (she’s pretty short and has a hard time making the leap!). Does anyone know if the cruise has anything similar? How tall are the beds? Anyone know of anything we could buy to bring with us?

She will be in an accessible cabin.

I am not aware of any ship providing step stools for bed access. Ships’ beds are not abnormally high, but they are not low. The space underneath the bed is pretty necessary for storage.

You could certainly buy or bring a copy of what you have

I’d order a copy of what you have and have it delivered either to the hotel you’re staying or to a convenient UPS store. This one is very, very close to Port Everglades- I grew up around the corner from both the port and this location.

Save the box, rebox it at the end of your cruise, stop back at the UPS store, and send it home. Or, if flying Southwest or you have status with other airlines, it’ll definitely fly free. You could discuss it flying free as medical equipment, but you might not win that argument, especially if you aren’t familiar with the details of the Air Carrier Access Act.

i have severe mobility limitations so am very accustomed to figuring out solutions and am exceedingly familiar with a wide range of accessibility laws.

When I filled out the Celebrity questionnaire for our May 2025 cruise on Celebrity Edge I ticked the boxes for them to supply a toilet raiser and a bed lever (the one that goes under the mattress). I'm 5ft 2 and find the beds quite high.

I would go to the source and ask Celebrity's Access Dept if they can provide a step to get in and out of  bed.  Access Dept:  (954) 628-9708 or special_needs@celebrity.com

And thanks @rockinrobin614 for posting a photo of the step2bed.   I am looking for something like this for someone who has difficulty getting in and out of bed and this looks very promising.

We purchased this for my sister to use after a hip replacement.  Worked quite well.  Can’t remember if we ordered from Amazon, but you can get them in medical supply places (probably cost more).  EM

I should also have mentioned that if you mail it to yourself at your departure city she could use it in the hotel. If you buy the same one as at home, she may be more used to it, even if the bed height changes.

I don't think the one she uses at home (it's called step2bed) is exactly portable.

It is not difficult to assemble or disassemble. Selecting a tool is a matter of safety and comfort, as well as of the user to adapt.

For example, my particular disabling condition has put me in a position where I physically cannot adapt to different situations. Most of my body’s joints are physically immobilized. I cannot always adapt to a differ tool. It is much easier and often safer to use the same tool time and again, and worth an extra burden to have the right tool for the job.
