Vancouver Info if needed

Recommended Posts

Basically you have two options, walk 3 blocks over to Waterfront Station and take the Canada Line out to YVR Station, your cost is $3.75 pp. Option 2 is to take a cab from the terminal to YVR, the cost is about $35. Both modes will take you about 35 mins. Sorry there is a 3rd option and that is a limo, the cost will be about $52 plus 12% tax and a tip. Oops, there may be a 4th option and that is a ship's transfer....but I have no idea of cost.

Shoppie? You still out there? Thanks for starting such a great thread!

Hate to ask again..... (no, I did not read the whole thread)

If you were getting off RCCL Radiance of the Seas on Friday Sept 14th, and did not have a flight until 10PM ...... what would you suggest?

The cruise line offers a

6 or 8 hour tour that gives you lunch and drops you AND your luggage off at the airport.

Any other suggestions? Anyone?

Thanks!

Shoppie seems be long gone....to places we know not where.

You may want to consider one the HOHOs which are a great way to see a lot of the city in a short period of time.

Both the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain offer free shuttles from Canada Place.

Both of these options would dictate checking your luggage with the luggage service at Canada Place or taking you luggage to a nearby hotel and having the bell desk put you luggage in their lock up (for a tip). You would also need to find your own way out to the airport which is very easy via the Canada Line from Waterfront Station (3 blocks from Canada Place) or by taxi at a cost of $35.

All you guys have been great, if I missed anyone, I'm sorry...I've been skipping thru this thread, and finding great info. I know this is a old and tired question, however, here goes. We arrive at Canada place on Sunday May 13th. I bought a buy now, 25% off, non-refundable, hotel room at Pan Pacific Hotel. I know now I could have got a much better deal elsewhere. Anyway, we are taking the train to Seattle on the 14th at 6:40 am. Would like to see and experience as much of Vancouver as possible.(looking for ideas) Hope to check-in or at least drop off luggage by 8:45....Hop on & off leaves Canada place at 9:00...2 1/2 hour tour. get off second time around at aquabus station to Granville Island...Stay a couple of hours, come back to downtown, check out the street food vendors....would like to have a good moderately price chinese dinner. Is the agua bus tour, up the creek, an option or even doable? Take taxi to train station Mon. Morning 5 am. Anything look wrong or something look better? I know it's a limited amount of time, and can't do everything we would like, but just hoping for a taste, to make us want to come back. Thanks in advance.

Flattery will get you everywhere ... Sounds like you have a great plan. I'm no expert on the HO HO's nor Chinese really but it does looks like a good plan.

On the Chinese thing . I almost forgot .. If you get a day pass or whatever it is that Scot will recommend for Canada line/sky train at the KingEdward stop (9 mins from downtown) (street level) is the Landmark Hot Pot restaurant .. a very different experience indeed.

Discovered this when very hungry will attending curling competition during the Olympics. If you have never been to this type of restaurant tell them you are beginners and need help. You cook your meals yourself from all sorts of meats veggies and seafood. (in a broth)

I am thinking you have it very well planned, the only Chinese restaurant in the downtown core that I can recommend is the Victoria which in Royal Centre at Melville and Burrard which is about a 5 block walk from the Pan Pacific. If you do go there just have half orders of 3 or 4 items, their full orders are just to much food for 2 persons.

Another excellent Chinese place to conisder is Sun Sui Wah http://www.sunsuiwah.com/en_home.html on Main Street. A little more difficult to get to, but worth the journey. They have a 2nd location now in Richmond near the airport, close to the Canada Line Lansdowne Station

Answered your other post re: moderate Chinese food (I also agree w/Scottbee that Sun Sui Wah has great food - but I find their service extremely variable).

Unless the Vancouver Trolley HOHO has changed since last summer, you'll get one free False Creek Ferries ticket you can use to get to Granville Island - and they remind you about the ticket as you approach the nearest stop to the ferry.

HOHO also has a stop where you can walk to GI, so if you time your visit right you won't even need to buy extra ferry tickets (go on ferry, come back on HOHO or vice versa). Touring on AquaBus or FCF is quite possible, both do a 40min cruise down to Science World at the end of False Creek and back (right now FCF is $10, AB $11).

You can also rejoin your HOHO route at the Edgewater Casino/Plaza of Nations via ferry - ask the ferry or casino staff to point you to the HOHO stop. Even if it wasn't your second go-around, you only miss one stop (Yaletown Roundhouse) between GI and Edgewater on the HOHO doing this.

I'm pretty sure one of you will have an answer for this! We are going on a land visit to Vancouver next week (March 27). We were there last year and saw the False Creek Ferries that went between Granville Island, the Aquatic Center, and the Maritime Museum on weekends.

We always stay in the West End and this time wanted to try the ferry to the Vanier Park area for the museums instead of driving. I even checked out the ferry site about 5 days ago. Today (3/22), the False Creek Ferry website shows "site suspended" and there are no more links to that company I can find. I did find the Aquabus site, but they evidently don't go to the Vanier Park area, only Granville Island and sites east. Do you know if FC Ferries went out of business? I searched a few news sites but couldn't find anything.

Thanks for any information.

Penny

Thank you Scott and Dennis for your information on the False Creek Ferries. We just got back last Thursday (4/5) from our trip to Vancouver and DID take the ferry to the Maritime Museum dock on a Saturday from Aquatic Park to visit the Museum of Vancouver. It was drizzling, but not bad, the service was timely, the ferry pilot great (he turned around to pick us up because we were at the top of the dock when he arrived), and we could pay after we got aboard (return fare saved us $2). We enjoyed the museum, and the return trip was right on time (45 minutes after the hour). We wanted to use public transit on Saturday because our hotel has limited parking space and fills up on Saturdays, as we found out in the past when we returned midafternoon on a Saturday on a previous visit.

Thanks again,

Penny

I have to catch an Amtrac bus from RR station in Vancouver at 1150 Station St.

Would I be better off taking a taxi from Canada Place or ride the skytrain?

How far is the skytrain station from Canada Place?

Thanks in advance. This will be Tuesday, May 15 at 10am.

If you take Skytrain from Canada Place;

you'll see a set of escalators right on the street, 1/2 block from Canada Place; take those down (while you'll have to do a 1/2 flight of stairs after the escalator, going this way saves a 3 block walk), buy your 1 zone ticket, turn left, and half a flight down to the platform. Board any train and get off 4 stations later at 'MAIN STREET SCIENCE WORLD'. The train/bus is across the street, you can't miss it.

This map should help:http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=212770407613531027445.000467645fcda21dd87b2&msa=0&ll=49.281692,-123.099575&spn=0.020297,0.05506

Better - depends... I assume you can manage all your bags or you wouldn't be asking about taking transit.

A cab from Canada Place will almost certainly be $10 or a little less (by 10am traffic rush-hour should be almost over). Assuming you don't have to wait for one (if you're among the earliest off the ship you won't wait; I've heard people mention up to 30 minutes when multiple ships are in dock) you'll be there in under 10 minutes.

A Skytrain ticket would be $2.10 if you have bought a book of 10 or $2.50 if you're paying cash. Main Street Skytrain station involves crossing the road and walking through a small park - call it one city block - to reach Pacific Central train station, and unless you find the entrance SB mentioned to get into Waterfront Skytrain station near the pier you'll be walking about 3 blocks to the platform, whether under- or over-ground. Both the Expo and Millennium lines run through Main Street so you won't wait more than 2-3 minutes for a train, then it's 6 minutes on the train.

In short - if you jump right in a cab you'll probably get there a couple of minutes faster; more than a few minutes wait for a cab means the skytrain is quicker. If there are four of you a cab is basically the same price; if it's just you the Skytrain saves you c.$7-8.

The part of the Skytrain that rides along the waterfront past Scienceworld also gives a very nice view across False Creek, so I'd give the Skytrain the win on aesthetics:)

What's better? That's up to you!

  • 2 weeks later...

We are staying two nights in a Yaletown condo, near the Roundhouse SkyTrain station. What is the best option to get to the pier?

Would the SkyTrain or cab be better? SkyTrain probably cheaper and seems to go right to Canada Place. We are able to handle our luggage and we are familiar using public transportation.

Leaning toward SkyTrain. Are tickets purchased at the station? Any other local information or tips for the SkyTrain would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The Canada Line terminates at Waterfront Station which is about 3 blocks from Canada Place. A cab will run you about $10. If you are going to be using transit more than the twice that you have indicated then there would be economy in going to the Pharmasave or the 7-11 at the airport and purchasing a book of 10 two zone FareSaver tickets for $31.50 otherwise just stick with the single cash fares.

Thanks for the info. Using the Trolley on Tuesday to get around so Wednesday will probably be our only use of transit. Will just be sure we have enough CAD for the fare. Will be sure to wave at you on Wednesday from the Baja deck forward.

Hey, I will be watching for you. We watched the Carnival Spirit sail by while having dinner...so the Alaska season has begun.

From Yaletown/Roundhouse to Waterfront, you could just take Skytrain. If you're in town for a few days, I would recommend purchasing a faresaver pack at the airport ($31.50/10 two-zone tickets) from the 7-11 in the terminal building (they're not available on the platform). By doing so, you avoid the $5/ea surcharge for tickets bought on the platform, and if you're going to be going around town anyway (and to Canada Place on cruise day), why not.

As for getting to Canada Place, when you get to Waterfront station, don't follow the crowd down the long hallway, use the other exit right on the platform that takes you to the corner of W.Hastings & Granville, which means a 3 block walk slightly downhill vs slightly uphill.

I guess I am missing something but the poster has indicated that they only intend using transit to get to the Roundhouse station and then to get from there to Canada Place which according to my basic math will cost them $22.50... in total and even less on weekends. So why would they want to pay $31.50 for a book of 10 tickets and have 6 tickets left over that they have no intension of using?
