this time Carnival Legend. He did'nt come up "missing" like the guy on Mariner of the Seas- this guy jumpd off his balcony IN FRONT of his family in the midst of an arguement with his wife.

What was "funny" to me they interviewd this guy who was complaining that Carnival had given him only a $50 credit for this-his cruise had been delayed 12 hours as the ship did search and rescue.

I could not believe that- it was like- can Carnival- or any other line can stop idiots from killing themselves?

After the guy said all this he added "and we have another cruise booked next year"-he added this because he was asked if this would deter him from cruising again -a true addict like me- I guess!

No.

On my latest cruise, I was going out on the back deck of the Maasdam late one night, behind a bunch of people going up the stairs to a suite on the Navigation Deck. The last person in line seemed somewhat ambivalent about the whole thing. Someone asked him if he were coming in with them and he said he was going out on deck for a few minutes. He sure did -- right to the stern railing. Then he turned around and saw me standing there watching him; went back inside. About five minutes later, he came out and went directly to the starboard railing. Again, he turned around and checked the deck, saw me watching him and went back inside.

I stuck around for a while, but he did not appear again.

I found a Security officer and told him what happened. Said there was nothing we could do; he'd find a way to jump if seeing me twice hadn't made him think twice. But if they were missing a pax at checkout the next day, from that group, I might be a good witness that he appeared ready to jump two times. He did check out as usual.

I've been wondering how long it will take before cruise ships either put up plexiglass above their railings or put up fencing to stop all this insanity of jumping, walking on or sitting on ship railings. If this continues, they won't have a choice but to do something.

An even sadder story was the man who threw his two sons out the 15th floor window of his hotel in Florida and then jumped himself, right there in front of his wife, with whom he was having marital problems. I cannot imagine the terror those poor boys felt----so sad that people come to this kind of thing, and even sadder that the killer doesn't have the cojones to face the music of their actions, by killing themselves.

I think the incidence of this is so small it's not worth doing. You can prevent people from accidents, but you can't create a foolproof cocoon where a determined person can't jump. We like to say "if this or that action saves only one life, it's worth it." But that's not realistic; we turn cruise ships into floating cages and those who plan on jumping will still find a way.

Exactly. If the ships are completely "encased" by fences or whatever, then lifeboats won't be able to be deployed. And the fences wouldn't work anyway because the idiots who WANT to jump will still find a way.

Hubby said it was on headline news this morning they were arguing over their bill for expenses on ship.

so sad-that woman who commited suicide last year on VOS did it over $3000 she lost in the casino. I guess some people do not know how to control their spending.

Last fall when we were on the MOS the last night we overheard this man yelling at his wife that their kids had charged up $800 for sodas and video game arcade etc. and he was blaming the wife. Both of us thought that was so sad. After all those kids had TWO parents-why was he NOT keeping up with the kid's spending?

I can't wait to hear how Nancy Grace figures out a way to blame this on the cruise lines.

She gets on my nerves! Hubby would watch her every night last summer during the Natalie Holloway thingie- I got sick of that-and I don't beleive that woman cared so much about that girl as in making a name for herself over that incident.
