I know I some time to learn all of this, but just what free food is available other then the dining. I got the freestyle thing and which restaurants charge. But what treats or food are available outside of the main dining areas. Also, what to the pubs/cafes offer and about how much. Thanks, trying to get information for other in my group. :)

You have Blue Lagoon that has wings, fish & chips, fried rice, hamburgers, free. Ice Cream, popcorn , cookies, pastries, are available.

This is all outside of regular dining. You will not starve, I promise you:D

Enjoy your cruise and have fun.

Not worry about us going hungry. But FIL is going with us, when he wants something he wants it now. Hates lines and Hates loud noises, getting a plan ready to know where everything is. Where are the pastries and cookies? He would like those.

Also, need to know where the best Bloody Mary's are. FIL loves those but if he has to wait he will start getting loud. Would it be best to have the bloody Bloody Mary in hand when going into the dining rooms? Still have to figure out a way so he doesn't know how much they are costing him. We haven't told him that is not included in the cruise price yet. Anyone with a aging parent, especially one with health problems, will understand. Love them to pieces, but they can get grumpy outside of thier safe zone.

Oh yeah! We know! lol

I would suggest going in the dining room with your first one in habd if he doesn't like to wait. Sometimes the drink orders can take awhile.

In Blue Lagoon you can get cookies and other goodies just walking by. They are really good I love the cookies. I sometimes grab a few to have them in the cabin if you get hungry later in the evening.

Have fun!

free cookies and pastries in reception, got it and thank you. between that and the popcorn our cruise is saved. really, thank you, i have made my notes..just trying to make my FIL's 1st and (due to health reason- most likely) last cruise easier. sweets and bloody marys, he will be set. paying final payment in next couple of days. have a folder with the information (even about the cookies) less then 90 days, i am READY

Blue Lagoon is open 24/7 and is a terrific option for snacks and pick-me-ups between regular meals. (Fish & Chips is out of this world and we love the chili, burgers and about everything else offered there. It's a diner style venue so you walk up, sit down and a waiter will take your order and servew you (unless you want to just pick up a dessert from the desert offerings as you pass by.)

Market buffet is available many hours a day for a quick walk by snack, as well as other offerings are available as listed by other posters.

But never forget there's always free room service available with a menu that includes sweet treats as well as other foods. A small tip of a dollar or two for room service snacks is polite but not mandatory but helps crew staff bringing food to your cabin door.

If you would like a plate of cookies, fruit or other sweets served in the dining venues delivered to FIL's cabin in the afternoon, bet you can get it if you talk to the cabin steward and explain the situation.

Stopping by a bar on your way to the dining room to order FIL a bloody mary so he can enter the dining room with drink in hand is a great idea. When his drink is empty in the dining room there will probably be a crew member nearby to ask if he would like another bloody mary or something else to drink.

Do some pre-cruise imagination as to how you can set the stage for FIL's cruise and mix in some ideas from your CC friends and I'll just bet you will have more fun than your FIL.

Dh and i are no problem, mon. we are seasoned travelers. just haven't done a cruise in awhile (1st time for the star) and not with anyone else, especially someone who needs extra care. i just want whales and i have a balcony room to sit and relax, watch for them. (and northern lights, i want northern lights...please just a night or 2 of clear skies) have no idea what FIL has in mind, i know he is excited about the trip. i keep emailing him with websites of stuff. but in 25 years, i have learned to be prepared.

i have a time set up with whale watching. for FIL a smaller ship with a bathroom close is best. need something where he can just sit and look out the windows, stay warm and still not miss anything. (have talked to harv and marv's, they seem very nice) DH wants to do the train in skagway, still need to find out if it's right for his dad. ketchican is where we will fish, if the dad wants to. otherwise, just wander around and do some shopping. i do want the ship to spoil him, with what he has been through the last several years he deserves it. i will figure out who to talk to when we get on the ship. i am sure his cabin steward will do a good job, dad is quite the character and people love him. as long as we can get him some food when he needs it. thanks everyone

If Star measures up to our first cruise on her last Sept. (Mex. Riviera), I think you will be A OK. Sailed NCL many times on many ships before (including our beloved Norway) and the Star comes out as our favorite so far. Booked our Sept. Alaska cruise while on the Star last Sept. Had an inside on Star last cruise. Have an aft balcony in Sept.

Smooth sails to you and your family.

Keep us posted as your cruise pans out (no pun intendended.):)

I've been on the Star twice to Alaska. It's a great trip on on great ship. You have to get your FIL some pound cake from the blue lagoon. It's awsome!!! I would get a couple of pieces and a conatiner of milk for my midnight munchies...YUM!!! Also there is a bar at the top of the ship (the name just popped out of my head, it's the Bimmini on the Dawn, and something else on the Star.) Anyway, great burgers at lunch and never crowded. Also, as th OP have said use room service, they are wonderfull. Have a great time.

None of the food is free...not on this ship nor any other cruiseship on any other line.

You can also get late-night snacks in the casino, usually served between 11 and midnight (don't quote me on the exact time). There are usually finger foods (pot stickers, grilled meat on a stick, etc.), sandwiches, cookies, fruit, etc.
