sanken Posted June 25, 2006 #1 Share Posted June 25, 2006 Are there locks on the inside of the cabin doors, that you can lock at night, and no one on the ship can use a pass or key to get in?
BearySweet2Cruise Posted June 25, 2006 #2 Share Posted June 25, 2006 Yes! the cabin doors have locks similar to a hotel with one of those slide over latch things.. dont know what one calls them, but they are like a loop that goes over a ball thing.. and the doors are secure from the inside. Tofutti Posted June 25, 2006 #4 Share Posted June 25, 2006 On Sovereign they also have the lock below the knob that you can turn for additional security, but did not have the loop thingy near the top that the other person mentioned.

cb at sea Posted June 25, 2006 #6 Share Posted June 25, 2006 Use them so your room steward doesn't walk in and surprise you! Don't laugh--it's happened to us! We learned to put the security lock on whenever we were in the room!
Rala Posted June 25, 2006 #7 Share Posted June 25, 2006 All the RCI ships I have been on which is 7 or 8 in all classes have a deadbolt lock on the inside. We also usually keep it engaged when in the cabin and always at night. Remember the gal that had $260 stolen out of her cabin when she and her hubby were sleeping in their locked cabin!!!!! Don't want that happening to me!! LOL
time4u2go Posted June 25, 2006 #8 Share Posted June 25, 2006 Ship personnel can still get into the room, even with these extra locks engaged. Maybe not the room steward, but there would have to be a way in. Otherwise, what would happen if someone refused or was unable to leave their room at the end of the cruise? Treven Posted June 25, 2006 #9 Share Posted June 25, 2006 The day we were supposed to dock at Maui, after returning From Fanning Isl a couple years ago, I needed a nap and inadvertently double locked the door. I was so sound asleep I missed the immigration check when we docked. Later that afternoon, after I awoke from my nap, the cabin steward said that he was concerned that I had double locked the door and his pass key wouldn't open the second lock. He didn't say whether one of the Sr. officers had an extra key or not, but I would imagine someone more than likely could have gotten in if they really needed to. Seems she was a real heavy sleeper and he liked to go places after she fell asleep. Maybe to gamble. ;) Or, did someone really climb from one balcony to another, in the dark while the ship was moving and get in that way even though the balcony door was locked too.. That was a gem of all gems.

Rala Posted June 25, 2006 #14 Share Posted June 25, 2006 I was hoping some of you "oldies but goodies" out there would remember that post. I got a big chuckle from all the discussion on that one!! I don't remember if the OP ever responded....probably too embarrassed! Laura

I don't remember if the OP ever responded....probably too embarrassed! Laura I would give anything to be able to find it in the search feature. It was so funny. If anyone has that thread copied, please post it. :D Yes, I do believe the OP did post again to say that she is a very sound sleeper and I think she said he had been known to go out after she was asleep on previous occasions. I believe that even she realized where the money went once we all posted to her that it was not possible to break into their cabin, while they were in it, in the total darkness, find the wallet on the night stand, steal the $260, close the wallet and place it back on the night stand and then go back out, bolt the door behind them and never be seen or heard. How is that for a sentence in a nut shell?
superjerryw Posted June 25, 2006 #16 Share Posted June 25, 2006 It could have happened. What if the thief was a vampire that could turn in to a could of smoke and go under the closed door, materialize in the cabin, steal the stuff and then get back out the same way. It could have happened.....
wraithe Posted June 25, 2006 #17 Share Posted June 25, 2006 I would almost guarantee that the crew has a way through the door, I cannot imagine that the Coast Guard or international maritime law would allow a door lock method that blocked the crew from responding to a fire or smoke alarm in a cabin no matter how many locks you threw from the inside. The stewards probably can't get through the dead bolt, but the fire crews can.

This new one could be done and makes more sense.. :D
sparkygrl Posted June 26, 2006 #19 Share Posted June 26, 2006 The sliders that go over the little ball lock can be opened from the outside if the person has a way of opening the key card lock. These types of locks actually only require a knife or simmilar instrument to open. (I've needed to open them as a firefighter and EMT). The deadbolts someone must have a way of unlocking them. Your idea is obviously flawed and in any case, it's too weird....why has no-one realised that the simplest solution is often the correct one? The stolen gear was clearly beamed aboard an alien spacecraft.;) Alan
Rala Posted June 26, 2006 #21 Share Posted June 26, 2006 Besides, wouldn't the vampire have given her a little chomp on the neck.... I mean he was right there in the room and she probably wouldn't even have woken up!!!! I don't know, Jerry, I think you have to come up with a better theory!!!
