HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) -- A fisherman was recovering from surgery after he was speared in the chest and knocked into the Atlantic Ocean by a blue marlin during a fishing competition off Bermuda's coast.

Ian Card, 32, was in stable condition at King Edward VII Hospital in the British Island territory from a wound that his doctor said could have been fatal.

"He was very lucky," said Dr. Christian Wilmsmeier. "It was a very serious injury."

Card and his father, Alan, both operators of a charter fishing boat and experienced marlin fishermen, had just hooked the fish Saturday when it suddenly leapt out of the water, impaled Ian Card just below his collar bone and knocked him into the ocean.

"The fish all of a sudden changed direction and jumped. The fish made a leap and Ian just happened to be in the way," Alan Card said.

The younger fisherman managed to struggle free while his father cut the line and helped his son get back into their boat, the Challenger.

They managed to make it back to shore in about 40 minutes for emergency medical treatment.

The fishermen estimated the marlin at about 800 pounds (363 kilograms) and about 14 feet (4.3 meters) in length.

Ouch!

So, the moral to the story is when the fish jumps, duck? Lucky young man. I hope he recovers quickly.

Good Lord - What are the chances???

Bet that fish goes back to the bar tonite and tells his buddies "You shoulda seen what I almost caught today - and it was THIS BIG!" (spreads fins wide) ;)

I also especially enjoy the name of the reporter for The Royal Gazette: Sam Strangeways

Best wishes to your nephew for a speedy recovery, Stephen!

I wish a speedy recovry to your nephew Steven. He will have quite a "fish story" to tell for the rest of his life.

Stephen - So glad that Ian's going to be OK. Best wishes to him for an uneventful recovery. He's had enough excitement for awhile, I would guess.

Can anyone imagine what must have been going thru Ian's head when he saw that fish flying thru the air at him, that long, sharp barb pointed straight at him? Oh, how terrifying! What a long way to go to get a great story. ;)

Hi Gang!

Many thanks all your kind wishes for my nephew Ian. He is doing well and making good progress.

He says all he could see was the black point of the bill aiming right at him with 800 lbs of fish kicking behind it!!!!

They are most disappointed at not landing the fish too. Had they caught it they would have won the first prize for the tournament.... $75,000.

Bummer!!!!!

Thanks again for your kind thought.

Stephen

Bummer!!!!!

Sure is. That prize money would have made a nice dent in Ian's medical bills and living expenses until he can return to work!
