Chile to Brazil Cruise Visas Help

I have no idea why they singled certain bills. We did not pay by credit card as we had the $100 pp ready and waiting. We had heard conflicting reports regarding use of credit cards, anyway. It was certainly quicker as long as there was no AB??? problem. I did not notice whether others used the cards or not, although I did see the logos posted. We were one of the first ones at the pay booths as others missed it and went straight to the immigration lines---then had to return.

contrary to what I had heard and the above posters, our travel agent advised that her recent pax had to pay the $100 Chile fee if they arrived or departed from Chile. Any very recent visitors who can comment?

Unless they have changed the ruling since the end of January, we certainly did not pay anything to depart from Chile and fly to Lima.

In Peru we did have to pay a tax to go from Lima to Cusco and from Lima to Quito. I think it was $30US p.p.

1/05 I sailed from Santiago (Valpariso) to Buenos Aires. At that time Chile had no visa it was a fee for entering the country.Since the US charges people from S. A. they charge us the same.On the paid receipt they staple in your passport it's called "Visita"Pasaporte: 0, Estados Unidos US $100. Be sure to check withyour travel agent or the Chilean counsulate re: using a charge card,to pay this fee, 1/05 it had to be cash only. I had a 100.00 bill topay this fee in Santiago airport and be sure it's not old bills, mine looked new which I got from the bank (it was crispy) but they checkyour bills and mine had a small slit in it so it was rejected. The $100 receipt is good for as long as your passport is valid.Uruguay we did not need a visa as we were there for the day. When buying leather goods they like being paid in US $ andyou can bargin with them. They like our $. My husband had aleather vest made and I purchased a leather jacket in BuenosAires at 2 different stores and both stores asked for dollarsand they would not take credit cards and only American Expresstravelers checks. Some stores refused travelers checks.Going to need a Brazilian visa, going to Rio, Recife and cross theAtlantic to Spain. Was hoping I didn't need a yellow fever shot, will check on that one.Was in China 10/05 and had no problem as my passport had Chile and Argentina stamps in them. Talking about Argentina ifyou fly out of Argentina you have to pay a fee at the airport wasapprox. 35. US $ which could be paid with cash or credit card.

I spend a lot of time in Lima Peru and we are doing the Buenos aires to Santiago NCL CRown cruise on Nov 29. There were a lot of counterfeit US $100 bills passed in South America last year and they all started with the serial numbers AB or CB so almost no where in SA will they take bills with those serial numbers. I always go to my bank prior to leaving and get ones with out those serial numbers. Also in SA they will not take any bills with tears or worn places on them. they want clean newer looking bills

China is checking passports with Brazilian visas for yellow fever vaccinations. IF you don't have the vaccination and have a Brazilian visa, you may not be allowed to enter China (and other countries). Not all of Brazil and Peru is yellow fever "country". But don't count on a Chinese official being able to differentiate between Rio and Recife. Recife (the city) is definitely NOT in the endemic zone, but the endemic zone butts up against Recife. I personally wouldn't take the chance of not having the vaccination certificate. The last thing you want to do is get in an argument with an immigration official in a foreign country.

I posted this reply regarding the yellow fever requirements on the Rotterdam Roll Calls Message Board. I didn't think of asking about it on this message board. What do you think?

At the risk of beating this subject to death, here are my thoughts on the yellow fever thing. My travel agent has given me this advice, “Uruguay will require yellow fever vaccination proof if you are traveling from a fever-indigent area of Brazil. As the Uruguayan(?) authorities will not know what areas you have visited while in Brazil, they will assume that you have been in a fever-indigent area.”

So, based on that thinking, we are getting yellow fever vaccinations. I don’t like shots and I don’t like to spend the big bucks for the shots but I don’t want to take the chance of not being able to get into the country.

We are going on a world cruise in January which includes ports such as Rio and others throughout South America and ports in other locations such as Africa, etc.

Our cruise line (Crystal) informed us of what the requirements were for the cruise from those places where visas are required to whether or not the Yellow Fever Shot is required. In our case it was required because we will be in Kenya (long after Brazil) and the next country we visit required the Yellow Fever shot for travelers who visited Kenya. So, that was an easy one to understand.

I guess for those who are not sure my recommendations are as follows.

First, contact your cruise line. They should know.

Check the CDC web site. The URL for the Yellow Fever on CDC is http://www.cdc.gov/travel/vaccinat.htm

Third, consult with a health specialist

Punkinchew, you bring up a good point. I guess before I ran off to get the shot I would first contact the cruise line. See what they say. If they say no shot is required, pose the same question to them.

Good luck either way.

Keith
