I went back to the Doubletree web site and found that they have a tremendous offer for seniors. If you are 62+ years old they had a cancelable reservation for just $96.85 plus $24.55 tax for a grand total of $121.40. In this case there is no need to get a deal through either Priceline or Hotwire.

Where is the Doubletree and what can you tell me about it? Rating, whats near, etc. Thanks.

Does it seem people are winning the Marriott for multiple nights rather than for a one night stay? I may get up enough courage to bid later today for our 3 night stay for January..

The Doubletree by Hilton San Juan is located about 2/3rd’s of the way from the airport to the Pan Am Cruise port. It is rated 2nd by a major travel website. (I don’t think I can mention the name on here)

The reviews by past guests were by far the best I could find for any hotel in San Juan.

I don’t know the area so I can’t comment on what is nearby.

The price I gave in my post is for 2/25/2011. The prices listed on the web site for a queen bed are:

1) $149 plus tax - Normal cancelable reservation held with a credit card. The card is not charged until you check in or don’t show up for the room.

2) $129 plus tax – Prepaid room. Your credit card is charged immediately and the reservation is not cancelable.

3) $96.85 plus tax of $24.55 – Special rate for seniors age 62+. Cancelable reservation held with a credit card. The card is not charged until you check in or don’t show up for the room.

I hope this helps.

Date: 01/27/2011 - 01/30/2011

# of nights: 3 (pre cruise)

Hotel: Marriott Stellaris Resort and Casino

Area: San Juan, PR

Site: Priceline

Winning bid: $111/night

To request a bed size and a specific room should I call now or wait until closer to the reservation date?

When you get this hotel through Priceline will the hotel also charge a resort fee?

Should we get a rental car?

I decided yesterday I would try my hand at bidding on priceline. I did my homework and got just what I wanted Marriot San Juan Resort and Stallaris Casino. 3 nights at $110 a night plus taxes and insurance = $392.52 I just called the hotel and confirmed my reservation and to request a king bed. That was pretty easy!

You can call at anytime to request bed size. Probably the sooner the better. As far as a specific room, with Priceline you pretty much get what you get. They may offer you to upgrade to oceanview for a certain price. If you want it, that is your choice.

I believe that they charge a resort fee when you check out. You are there for 3 days so if you want to see a lot, a rental car would be a good choice. There are plenty of taxis and bus transportation to Old San Juan. Restaurants and stores with in walking distance of the hotel.

Hope this helps - Kristi

Hi there! Used Priceline for the first time yesterday. Requested 3.5 stars in San Juan and started bidding at $85. Had to add "Dorado" and "Cabo" each time but still no luck. Increase bid gradually adding those areas and ended up at $110.

Received an "accepted" message that said Congratulations you've been upgraded to "Resort" instead of 3.5 stars. :D

I don't know that I like the uncertainity of Priceline or Hotwire.... not knowing exactly where you'll get placed until the bid is accepted..... I'm too much of a Control FREAK!! :p But, I'm glad that it worked out this first time and definitely like that the price is 50% off what Trip Advisor advertises as an average room rate. ;)

does anyone book a hotel room directly anymore?

I usually do but this time the regular rates of the resort hotels was just not in my budget. I am sort of a control freak but decided to use Priceline for the first time only after reading all the good advice here on CC. I did have that feeling of dread while I waited for my bid to be accepted but I got excatly what I was hoping for.

Got the San Juan Water and Beach Club for 5/2/10 for $86 per night which came to just shy of $100 with all taxes and fees. This is a 3 1/2 star on Ilsa Verde. It did take quite a number of tries and a lot of free rebids. I knew that Priceline resorts in San Juan are running about $110 before fees and the dreaded "resort fee" and since we were arriving in the early evening the night before a cruise, the goal was to get a decedent hotel cheap. So be guided by that: 3 1/2 for $86 or thereabouts. Good luck.

if someone is going to use priceline to book a hotel how far inadvance should a person try to get a room?

We are cruising on 2/6/2011. Booked our hotel last month for precruise. I don't think that it is ever too early.

Just got the Sheraton Old San Juan for 5/2 after our cruise for $83 on Priceline. It looks very convenient to the main cruise port, but we are arriving at the Pan American pier. It got mixed reviews on Trip Advisor, but it looks to be in the middle of Old San Juan. Anyone have any experiences here?

We stayed here last year. That is about what we paid on special. The hotel is clean. The rooms vary in size and view. The location is outstanding. Walking distance to anything in Old San Juan.

Got the Marriott for $108 + taxes for 12/4/10. Thanks to everyone for all of the tips on bidding. This was my first time bidding on a hotel and these posts provided fantastic information.

(Noticed after I posted this that I put wrong date in thread name- should be for 12/4 - which is a Saturday night)

Hi kis2006,

I saw that you were "awarded" the Intercontinental- that's the hotel I dream about staying at. What star level did you bid at? And did you start bidding lower than $110? What did you total amount come to?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new to this bidding business and a little nervous about it to be honest. We're looking to stay in San Juan for a night pre- and post-cruise in February, 2011.

Thanks!
