K8T Posted October 28, 2006 #1 Share Posted October 28, 2006 I wonder if anyone knows whether Galaxy has the facility of monitoring noise in a cabin via the telephone. On a recent P&O Cruise we could dial into the cabin and listen whether all was quiet or not, we have also been able to do this in numerous hotels. Despite having contacted Celebrity on a number of occassions, no one has been able to give me an answer, but just say that babysitting is available! I would be grateful for any information you may have, as the Berlitz Guide says it is available - how reliable is this?? Many thanks Kate
kitty9 Posted October 28, 2006 #2 Share Posted October 28, 2006 Are you thinking of leaving a child unattended in a cabin? In my very humble opinion, that's a really bad idea. Do you realize that anyone with a master key can get into any cabin anytime they want? And what should happen in an emergency? What if you can't get back to the cabin to get your child? In this day and age of far too many unsavory people in this world, leaving a child unattended in a cabin is not the best idea, especially considering there are babysitting services on board. I've not heard of that function being available on board the ship.
Poll1 Posted October 28, 2006 #3 Share Posted October 28, 2006 I think you are being a little unfair, If a baby usually sleeps well and is settled, I would much rather leave them safely in the cabin and check every once in a while than drag them around the ship in a stroller! As for unsavoury people, surely leaving them a short while without anyone knowing a baby is in the cabin. as you would at home, my be preferential than leaving them with someone whom you have no knowledge about. Have you ever been on board a ship with an emergency that you haven't been able to get back to your cabin? Are you saying that the ships are unsafe and that someone is likely to enter your room? I have cruised many times but never have heard of any problems like this. As long is it isn't for hours and you know your child is settled - what's the problem? But sorry Kate, I don't know the answer to your question! Polly
dkjretired Posted October 28, 2006 #4 Share Posted October 28, 2006 I believe they do have that system or they did the last time I was on Galaxy. How good it is I don't know but I do remember something in the cabin documents on board about how to operate it.
cusyl Posted October 29, 2006 #5 Share Posted October 29, 2006 You didn't ask for any opinions, but I wouldn't leave a baby alone in a cabin.
kitty9 Posted October 29, 2006 #6 Share Posted October 29, 2006 Sorry Polly, but you're forgetting the recent fire on the Princess ship (my friend was out of his cabin and couldn't get back to it at the time the fire was discovered and had to report to his muster station) and how about the recent problems with ships listing a great deal? How about the rogue wave of recent past? If one of those things happened and a child is alone in a cabin, what would happen? And in my 45 cruises, I've had crew members come into my cabin/suites many times for any number of reasons--and a few of those times they've walked in without knocking. Just as I would never leave an infant alone at home (if someone actually did that, it's called neglect and can be a felony), I don't think it's a great idea on a ship, especially when there are other resources available. K8T Posted October 29, 2006 Author #7 Share Posted October 29, 2006 I am sorry I asked this question now and I feel sick to my stomach that I would be seen as being neglectful of my child. All I would like to do is to take a couple of hours to have dinner - just down the way from our cabin, without disturbing my fellow cruisers. I asked a question not opinions and thank you dkj for your information. Needless to say I will not be posting again on this site. I didn't think it was for criticisim, but just for information. Thank you
dame2005 Posted October 29, 2006 #8 Share Posted October 29, 2006 Galaxy does have the monitoring devices in the cabin. I stayed close, checked often and it was wonderful having the time to myself. Good luck.

Thank you Please don't let this unfortunate incident stop you from posting. This site is a wonderful source of information and if you check into roll calls section you will probably find your cruise listed. You don't have to meet people when you go on your cruise but the info you receive may be important. AGain, sorry for the problems...
Rare Cruise Raider Posted October 29, 2006 #10 Share Posted October 29, 2006 Why not just pay a sitter or nanny to go on the cruise with you? That would allow for you to leave the room for dinner, tours, etc. while the sitter would enjoy a paid cruise while watching the child.

l929 Posted October 30, 2006 #12 Share Posted October 30, 2006 How does this monitoring system work? I usually bring a baby monitor and go next door into my mother's cabin during nap time, but this time around we will be two cabins away and I'm afraid my monitor wont work. This could be great. oliviaonthe beach Posted October 30, 2006 #13 Share Posted October 30, 2006 This seems to be quite a difference in perspective. The OP seems to view the cruise ship as a VERY large house while others (including me) view the cruise ship as a small town. From the latter perspective, leaving my baby unattended in the cabin and going to say the pool or casino would be child abuse/neglect and subject to an investigation by Children's Social Services in my town. I cannot imagine the rationale that is being used here to justify such a thing. I also can't imagine why cruiselines would offer such equipment. The liability they are risking seems enormous to me. Please reconsider such a decision. As to staying on the subject of the original post, too bad if I am off of it. The welfare of children comes first in my book! We started cruising when our DS was 3 1/2 (he's now 5 1/2). We took turns staying with him when he napped, and did earlier this month as well (though probably no more naps after this school year). I cannot imagine leaving a baby or small child alone in the cabin, even if they are sleeping!! And it was a great excuse for one of us to nap or read, besides being the right thing to do. Adjoining cabins, sure. But down the hall for dinner????

If I took my baby on a cruise it would be with me 24/7. I would not even trust the child to an in-cabin sitter from a cruiseline. If I wanted time with my spouse I would consider taking along a trusted member of my family.
Rare mahdnc Posted October 31, 2006 #16 Share Posted October 31, 2006 How does this monitoring system work? The monitoring is done thru the cabin phone, if I remember correctly.
MAXWEBSTER Posted November 1, 2006 #17 Share Posted November 1, 2006 The monitoring is done thru the cabin phone, if I remember correctly. Is this something that has to be "set up," or is it wired so that anybody with the means (crew, ship's office, KGB) can listen in to room noise at will? I would hate for anybody to get wind of my world domination plans!
