That's not true... it IS just for non US Citizens... I have never turned over my passport... this is an immigration issue.

 

I don't understand then. I HAVE HEARD them call for all American Citizens to proceed through Immigration and to pick up their passports. On every cruise I've had to hand in my passport by the way. I swear, I would not lie about this.

All passengers must clear immigrations, but US citizens do not need to surrender passports. Infact many many US citizens do not even have passports and go cruising. (atleast for the next few months, but no later than June 2009)

Note to self: Clean all skelton's out of closets before boarding cruiseships. :p

As an FYI: ON some of the smaller cruise lines ALL passengers surrender their passports at embarkation and they are returned when you disembark. (That mkaes it kinda hard on the ones that insist on carrying them when ever they leave the ship but that is a whole different discussion.)

My DD looks younger than 18. She had to carry her driver's license to the casino this summer to prove her age. Nothing on her S&S card indicated she was at least 18.

 

No personal information is displayed on your S&S card for security reasons. The card has a magnetic stripe. When the card is swiped at a register it bring up the pertinent information on the screeen. Tables in the casinos do not have registers, hence the request for ID.

I am not sure how they mark the cards, but last year I accidentally gave them my son's sign and sail for a drink. The waitress came back and told me she couldn't sell alcohol on that card and if I could please give her my card. I was glad to see they actually abided by that even if I gave them the card by accident.

I"M from Canada and no one in our family of five has ever had to surrender our passport for Costa or Carnival . AS a family we've also toured Europe and have never handed it over there

 

Can't speak for Costa... but perhaps Carnival made this change prior to your cruise earlier this year... I know that it USED to be standard practice, but perhaps in the last year it has changed. That would be great if that was the case, for our neighbors to the North

It is now no longer required (last 2 cruises for me).

 

I still can't figure out why Galveston still has a fur-en-er line for check-in. Not that I'm complaining. ;)

OK Hopfully this will enf this conversation, Carnival Cruise line dousnt make the decision wether to take your passport or not its It is I.C.E (Immigration and customs Enforcment) Who tells them who's passport needs to be taken! When you fill out your funn pass check in online that information is given directly to ICE and its up to the agent wether they want your travel docs or not! Regardless of where your from it's mostly more common on foriegners or individuals who have been but on the alert list they have which does exist Trust me!

Wow, I'm exhausted looking through 1382 photos of your cruises. You do look very young, sorry but your not drinking on my ship, I wouldn't believe your docs, I want blood samples. Just kidding!:) You do need to take more photos of yourself for your album, I enjoyed the shots.

Took my son on a cruise when he was 23. Carnival bartender didn't believe he was 21 and made him go back and bring back drivers license. Daughter is 24 and in August was in the casino with me (not playing). Casino host asked her how old she was. She said " I am 24, sir". D### - no one said anything to me!

After 20+ years and 20+ cruises, I can only speak for Carnival. As an American citizen, we have never had to surrender our passports. In fact, back when Moby Dick was a tadpole, you did not even need a passport. LOL

I just wanted to say that I asked my TA and it is in fact only for non US citizens that they take away the passports. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

 

Second, I'm happy you enjoyed my pictures. :) It was an amazing trip. :D I don't think I actually have any pics of myself. I think however, that I took some pics of my Mom. Can't really remember. I'll try to get some pics of myself on my next cruise on the Legend this December. The only problem is, I don't like having my picture taken. Those shipboard photographers are so annoying!!!!:eek:

I am not sure and should leave this question for someone who has teens but I believe I have seen cards that say "under 18" down the side of it. I believe 18 is the age of consent on the cruise ships. Thanks. And very funny!!!!:D I don't think I actually had any pics of me in that album. I may have had a couple of pics of my Mom though. Can't really remember.

And I'm righter then your TA, even non-Americans are no longer required to surrender their passports.

Whilst it is true you are not supposed to surrender your passport, also true they can refuse boarding for any reason. ;)

 

Not to worry though, as Irish said, it is no longer a requirement. :D
