dippy Posted November 23, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Now that I have your attention, I'm curious about this statistic... Has your stop at HMC ever been cancelled. If yes, what month?
jhannah Posted November 23, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Yes, calls at HMC have been cancelled. I don't think there's any particular month. Seas can become too rough for tendering at most any time.

I am aware that HMC stops have been cancelled but I am curious as to the frequency with which this can take place. DiPPY
Onbec Posted November 23, 2006 #4 Share Posted November 23, 2006 We have been to HMC 5 times, always in late Feb. or early March. Once was cancelled due to rough seas and high winds, once was so cool everyone had sweaters on, and almost no one was in the water. The other three visits were fabulous days in paradise. So based on my experience, is that a 20% chance of a cancel?
SandyMc Posted November 23, 2006 #5 Share Posted November 23, 2006 We have been twice - once was cancelled for winds and high seas - must have been March or April both times. Guess it's just hit or miss. Our next cruise stop there in December 07 - sure hope luck is with us!
Randyk47 Posted November 23, 2006 #6 Share Posted November 23, 2006 5 times to HMC, always in February or March and not one cancellation.
michmike Posted November 23, 2006 #7 Share Posted November 23, 2006 we've missed it twice out of 5 scheduled stops. I think the 2 times we missed were in November and December, but couldn't swear to it.
missygirl Posted November 23, 2006 #8 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Cancelled one time in late March due to rain and high seas, one time sunny morning and rainy afternoon in Nov.
mechcc Posted November 23, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Only scheduled to stop once, made it on the first and only tender, then it was cancelled. Date was 4 Nov.
Dog Mommie Posted November 23, 2006 #10 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Only scheduled to stop once, made it on the first and only tender, then it was cancelled. Date was 4 Nov. Didn't know y'all made it to HMC, too!!! That tender must have been full of Hal-o-ween Dam Cruisers!:D We have been there 1 time before, but don't have a clue when...probably in late Nov. or Dec. Heck, I can't even tell you the number of cruises, which lines, etc. (accurately), so this is my best guess!
RuthC Posted November 23, 2006 #11 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Both? How can a yes/no question be "both"?
Rare Copper10-8 Posted November 23, 2006 #12 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Both? How can a yes/no question be "both"? Very carefully!;) Yes, we've had HMC cancelled twice on us, once due to weather and once due to swells - nature of the beast!
arzz Posted November 23, 2006 #13 Share Posted November 23, 2006 We have made it to HMC more times than not -- but it has been cancelled more than a couple of times -- and there have been times when it was not cancelled that all it did was rain all day. When the weather is nice however, HMC is spectacular.
ekerr19 Posted November 23, 2006 #14 Share Posted November 23, 2006 We're with Randy - never one cancellation. :D Luckily...since it's one of my favorite stops.
cruisinjudy Posted November 23, 2006 #15 Share Posted November 23, 2006 I have not yet been to HMC. It was only scheduled on one cruise and it was cancelled. That cruise was in early November. Someday.......
sswitenki Posted November 23, 2006 #16 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Ok if the HMC stop is cancelled, where do they go? Slowly to the next port, just out to sea and stop for a time or find some other port instead? Just curious.
legalslave Posted November 23, 2006 #17 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Have been scheduled for HMC twice. We were able to go ashore both times. First time was in November. It rained the entire time. Second time was in January and it was very, very cool. Diane
kryos Posted November 23, 2006 #18 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Has your stop at HMC ever been cancelled. If yes, what month? September 2004 ... on a Caribbean b2b on the Zuiderdam. We made it on the first week, but by the second week ... with two hurricanes out over the Atlantic, it had to be cancelled. Lots of other port stops cancelled in that first week as well. In fact, even Port Everglades was shut down and our cruise had to be extended by 2.5 days. Wonder why HAL pulled out of the Caribbean during hurricane season? They took an absolute blood bath over those two weeks. That second half of the b2b ... five days ... I think there were about 700 people (at max) on a ship that holds around what? 1800? And, those few people onboard got fantastic discounts for being there. Blue skies ... --rita
Krazy Kruizers Posted November 23, 2006 #19 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Yes -- when we first started to cruise HAL several years ago, nearly all stops there were cancelled because of winds, rough seas, rain, etc. We began to wonder if we would ever see the island. Feb -- Mar -- Nov -- Dec -- I can't think of all the various months it was cancelled.
dippy Posted November 23, 2006 Author #20 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Ok - this may be a stupid question but her it comes - We made it HMC the one one time I travelled with HAL but what does the ship do when it can't tender to the island? Does it slow down its engines getting to the next port; does it stay anchored and tease the passengers with views of HMC; does it lower the minimum bets in the casino to keep passengers happy:) ? That was 4 questions but I was never good at math. Rob

Sswitenski and Dippy, when they have to cancel HMC, it usually becomes a sea day (at least it did the two times we experienced it). They both ocurred on the next to last day of the cruise, so the ship slowly "cruised" along the various small islands of the Bahamas.
Darspurs Posted November 23, 2006 #22 Share Posted November 23, 2006 We were also due there on 4th November and were not on the one and only tender that went ashore before the stop was cancelled. As it was the last day of the cruise the ship sailed slowly back to FL. I think we left HMC around 10.30 or 11 am from memory. The casino opened, the poker table was the busiest it was the whole week with players playing all day and I certainly heard announcements of other activities being organised during the day. The only other time I was scheduled to stop at a private Island in the Bahamas was more or less the same date 3 years earlier on Norweigan - The weather was identical to this trip with extremely strong winds and we didn't even get as far as anchoring - That time the winds were with us all the way back to New York. By my experiences and that of others on this thread it looks as though late October or early November might have more windy days than other times in the area. We were upset we missed it as the sea and sand looked such lovely colours even under the heavy cloud cover.

Songhee Posted November 23, 2006 #24 Share Posted November 23, 2006 We were on the Panama Canal relocation cruise in October and HMC was fabulous. I noticed on the itinery that HMC had a *saying "sea conditions permitting" -- this was the only stop that had that provision. btw the entire cruise from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale was so flat you could have done it in a canoe -- the weather and seas were unbelievably favorable. It was a super cruise.
OceanLiner Posted November 23, 2006 #25 Share Posted November 23, 2006 I think that Disney is the only line that has overcome the rough seas issue at their private island. They spent a zillion Mickey bucks and built their own dock so that they do not tender. This has given vastly improved odds at landing on the island, though I know of at least one incident when the seas were so rough that they just did not want to risk damage to the ship. HMC seems to be a large investment for just HAL to use. I'm wondering if Carnival has considered letting other sister lines use the facility. Cunard?
