It makes sense to me that HAL would get a lower mark for service ... when compared to some of the luxury lines on that list. Those other lines carry less passengers and have a higher crew to passenger ratio. Therefore, it stands to reason that their service would be better. After all, their passengers are paying for better service by booking a luxury line in the first place. There are things they can do for their passengers on those luxury lines that HAL simply can't do. There are just too many passengers on the HAL ship, compared to some of those lines, and less crew.

But, I'll bet if they compared strictly mass market lines, then HAL would be right up there among the top for service.

We didn't find the service anything different than any other line to be truthful. It certainly wasn't consistantly bad, in fact most of it was pretty good or very good, just not outstanding. There just little things that did keep it from being perfect. As for what lines do and don't make the list, no matter what we would like to think, a great deal has to do with 1-advertising and 2-who is reading and voting. I think we all love to see these polls but know they are not terrbile objective. Of course any poll can be that way. NMnita

Rita, I think you are probably right, it isn't quite fair or honest to compare luxury liners with mass marketed one. Of course, we would all expect to get top of the line if we were willing and able to pay the price. Again, though I do have to say our service and the friendliness or lack of same on the Amsterdam wasn't quite what we had expected> little things like sometimes they pulled chairs out for the gals, sometimes not, sometimes we were offered fresh ground pepper, sometimes not; on occassions we would pass crew member chit chatting in the halls and they wouldn't even say HI, never did the assistant wait person know who, at our table wanted coffe after dinner, who tea and who decaf. yes, these are very small things and would never affect our opinion on HAl or any line, but I remember the days when these things wouldn't be an issue. Krazier Kruisers has it pretty right, like on all lines, cut backs have affected service, food, entertainment and other things. I sometimes think of cruising in today's world as a floating, 3 or 4 star resort, giving us a chance to see and do many things in a short period of time. NMnita

I can only speak for our personal experience and when comparing the service we have gotten on Celebrity, Princess and RCI.........HAL wins by miles!!! Our personal experience over MANY HAL cruises has been outstanding, personalized, genuine service.

Every single steward, every single cruise? No, of course, not. But every single cruise we have received great service over all.

If I was served by an excellent dining steward and you had one who seemed distracted or inattentive or whatever....... I report having been happy in the dining room; you won't if your steward was disappointing. But, if I don't answser their survey and you do, HAL gets a bad mark. I would have given a good mark so what do these surveys really mean?

Is it sometimes people with an axe to grind that make sure to complete their survey and mail it it?

I just received Conde Nast yesterday and have just glanced at it.Its funny how these polls differ from what friends and loved ones have expirienced. Most of my friends love Celebrity and HAL with my fiance having sailed HAL 3 times (I've never had the pleasure of HAL,but will in the next couple years) and they seem to feel the two lines are similar depending on the ship with HAL getting the edge on Buffet assistance............Frank

Just remember that polls such as this are totally un-scientific. As noted, it's based on readership and who among the readers responds. I don't buy into movie reviews, either! ;)
Movie reviews, a perfect example: I remember, many years ago, I had wanted to see "Summer of 42" but DH wouldn't hear of it because of bad reviews. He didn't want to spend $2.00 (LOL) each to see a bad movie. I was about to give up when one of his co-workers saw and reported back how much he enjoyed it. The following week DH gave in; to this day we talk about how awesome and funny, but meaningful the movie was. So much for movie reviews from then on. NMnita
