Christmas glory cat fight last sea day

njs

Recommended Posts

I was told by another cc member that I met on board that there was a cat fight (about chair hogs of course ) on the 12/23 sailing - I think it was on the last sea day. Did anyone see it? Im not a pool deck person (that's why we book balconies) but my teenagers went up on deck, and came back down after wandering around for 20 min - complained there were no empty chairs - all saved by blue towels but alot with no one lying on those blue towels.

but no one's answered the OP's question yet, right? (or did i miss it?). can anyone confirm that this happened? The Last thing i'd want to do on my cruise vacation is get into an argument with anyone, even a "chair hog" who is a total stranger to me. Pick your battles, i say.

Sandi, I cruised on the Doric (Home Lines) in late 70's and yes we were assigned a chair. Not only did you have to go to the dining room for your dinner time and seating but you went to the pool deck for your deck chair. They would put a card on it with your name and cabin. Then they would place it for you wherever you wanted (barring room). Of course, the ship was much smaller than those of today. Also the average age at that time seemed to us to be 92  . We were only 22 or thereabouts and we did want to sit out all day. The rest of the ship was playing shuffleboard.

Also at that time they used to let the family of the cruisers go aboard for a Bon Voyage party. I was a kid back then but I remember seeing my parents off with the party in the cabin where they had these little finger sandwiches and then going home with my grandma. :) Everyone also used to get so dressed up. I was talking to my mom the other day and she said even on the non-formal nights people were dressed up fancy. Everything was so much more formal. But the whole world was more formal back then. She also said that there were very few children onboard. Much different back then.

I don't hog a chair but when I cruise I'm single. So if I'm up there by the pool and want to jump in for a quick cool down what do I do with the towel or my shoes and shirt? I'm not being sarcastic here just want to know.

I think most people can easily distinguish a chair that is really being used ~ as in your example ~ from one that is being saved by someone who has yet to show up and use it.

A chair being used by someone who is in the pool, or in the bathroom, will usually have a towel spread out on it, with sandals, a book, a beach bag, etc. on or under the chair.

A chair being saved will have a neatly folded towel or some other single object on it, with no other belongings around to indicate there is an actual person using the chair. Especially easy to spot when there is a row of chairs, each with ONE object on it, and nary a person in sight.

That was why I re-asked the question in a post this am in hopes that the person who saw it would respond - perhaps they're busy unpacking. I was told on the ship that they planned to post about the incident.

And I agree that you can tell the difference between chair hogs saving a row with individual items and a chair that might be unoccupied but is being used:)

I don't understand the infamous chog's reasoning. If they are going to be busy off somewhere else (water sliding for an hour, eating lunch, walking the ship, casino, etc.) why the heck do they feel the need to have a dumb chair by the pool during this time.....they don't actually have a need to sit their butt in the chair and aren't swimming?!? LOL!

Dh and I have it made. :) Our kids are grown-ups.......sort of. We don't particularly care to swim in the dinky pools with a million kids and other strangers these days. So, we just camp out in secluded spots or less crowded areas of the ships.....or even better yet.....when we have the few extra dollars at the time and are able to reserve a balcony stateroom, we hang out on our balcony.....aaaahhhhhh! There's something to be said for nice quiet ocean view and warm breezes off the Gulf.....ahhhhh!

I dont have a problem with someone wanting to save a chair so that when they get out of the pool or back from the slide they have somewhere in the sun to dry off . My main concern is with those who save them early in the day and dont reappear until the afternoon and expect to see their spread out belongings intact on all those chairs:confused: And I cant understand why they cant figure out why people are upset with them

buddyjo; TomnCheryl -- were you guys on this sailing? any truth to this? if so, how did crew handle it?

TomnCheryl opted out of this cruise before last payment

Buddyjo was on this cruise and was aware of it happening. However neither of us were there when it happened, so was hoping to get the scoop from the person who said they saw it happen (also a cruise critic member) Hopefully that person will come on these boards soon to set the record straight:p

I was the one "spreading the story" to njs as it was told to me by a fellow cc member whom we both met but have not seen on the board since returning from the cruise. Maybe we will see her soon and she can add live details to the story. I don't usually like to "gossip" (my preference ~ not commenting on anyone else's behavior) but it was too good a story not to pass on to njs after our chats online and meeting her in person on the ship.:(

I can confirm that we did see a lot of chairs being saved and no "bodies" present for several - several hours as we like to sit in the shade and people watch but did not see the argument that took place although we did hear about it from several people. At one point, I just told my children and grandchildren to help themselves as I removed towels from the chairs and layed them across the back of the chair, I told my children and grandchildren that I would deal with anyone that showed up to complain by no one ever did.

Hey dbrucern

Sorry we missed you at the meet and greet. Hope you had a good time on the cruise with your family. My kids thought chair saving was worse on this ship, altho staff did help my daughter find a chair and relocate to a deck where there was room, so not all is negative

Hey buddyjo, I hope no one thinks you were wrong in "spreading the story" or I was wrong in asking about it on this board. I was just trying to encourage the people who saw it to share the news about what happened. Maybe thinking there might be a possibility of becoming a casualty of a cat fight if you are a chair hog will discourage the practice.

OH NOOOOOOOOO Jess, you know it's vacation........you're on a cruise........ the jello wrestling pit MUST be jello shots (or jello and everclear) the winner gets held under for 10 seconds at a time till they feel the need to stop :D ohhhhhhhhhh and it should be on the Funnel deck........bet they'd need to expand

yeah, but it's important gossip in a way :p i mean chair hogging is a constant topic on this board, and many feel it's never enforced. it's a shame that there was a fight (my view in my earlier post that a fight is the last thing anyone wld want on vacation stands). but, if this did in fact occur, while it is terrible, it will be very interesting to hear how the crew handled it.

If you would like to break a Chair Hog simply walk by grab that 30.00 towel and move on down the line. Use it for yourself, take it ashore if need be, Lose it if at all possible... Remember it's not assigned to your stateroom.....

John

I could'nt agree more

More likely to discourage the people who might DO something about the chogs than discourage the chogs themselves.

I still say there is an easy solution, shout out if this stuff is anyone's and if noone answers move their stuff to L&F or place it NEATLY someplace nearby.

And I agree, there is a HUGE difference between a chog and someone who is using that particular chair but is away for a few minutes or is in the nearby pool/waterslide (or at the bar).

LMAO.....thats a good one....:p

You know...when a chog puts thier towel on a chair and holds it unoccupied all day, thay are actually stealling that chair from every passenger on board that needed to use it. then they spend precious vacation time searching for an empty chair...thus stealing even more from other passengers...... to heck with it....collect all the towels and burn them!!!!!! DOWN WITH CHOGS!!!! :p

The problem is that you have maybe 50-100? prime time lounge chairs encircling the pool and lets say 500 cruisers that want to use ONLY those chairs.

You do the math!

There are ALWAYS empty lounge chairs on the other decks and pool deck areas.

I for one would not waste one valueable vacation second scoping out saved lounge chairs waiting for some 30 minute clock to evaporate!

Sheesh!

I humbly disagree, French_Fry. On the Glory Christmas week, it was packed and we had 3 sea days! You do the math. DH and I ended up on the aft deck away from all the pools in a whipping wind just to get a little sun time. And forget about the two days that the kiddies wanted to be in the pool. We found 2 chairs for 9 people on the deck above the pool. I don't have to be right next to the pool but it would be nice to be close enough to see the kids;)

This seems to go back and forth with all sorts of advice on both sides,

some give directions as to "how long" to leave stuff on chairs etc, which I never understand, would you stand there for 30 minutes and count it down or ??

That does not sound like fun

Others put out their own preference, to take a dip, lunch, whatever and are angry if stuff is moved

and more and more we see fight stories and confrontations

Really the cruiseline should be responsible for this, instead of endless posts write Carnival (I did), make suggestions...be proactive. When I get on Glory I fully intend to go to the supervisors/hotel management if they are not enforcing their rules

Ultimately it is CCL rule...they need to enforce it

I like Carnival a LOT and think it has many things better or equal to Princess, except for enforcing their own rules

When I sailed Princess some years back they had deck hands who would get chairs down for you, move chairs around and "reclaim" some saved chairs

Now, from reading reviews and talking to people, Princess has gone further...they have a lost/found on at least some of the ships, and deck hands who take "sunbathing towels" and stuff and put them on the manned lost/found table

additionally Princess has a special group of "youth patrol" people who are NOT full fledged security guards, they wear special yellow shirts I think and they totally keep kids out of the adult pool, spa, whirlpools, etc, and patrol any other kid/teen related problems

Carnival could easily do the same, it would not take many people...it would involve more signs, a few more workers

Cruises should be fun, not confrontational

(PS I personally had no problem on Imagination, I do think Carnival workers can be too "nice", too kind, and maybe intimidated by English so they let stuff slide)
