Transatlantic with Dog in Kennel?

Does anyone have any information on traveling with a small dog on the Cunard line in the kennel? I may be relocating to the UK and this could be a great way to "move" one way and bring my small dog on the NY to London voyage.

I understand the vaccination requirements, but don't know if anyone has experience on traveling with a dog. I don't know how they handle the costs/etc and requirements for entry on the ship and if anyone has any suggestions.

My wife has been researching this but has been very stressed getting good information. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello: We toured the kennels on the QM2 on our April transatlantic. We were interested also in transporting a dog to England. Of course, all the vaccines, pet passport, etc must be in order to enter England or face the quarantine that existed in the past for rabies. That now is not a problem.

The kennels are quite nice - located up top with a full-time person who cares for the pets. There were 6 dogs when we toured the kennel. The caretaker lets the dogs out at least 4 times per day in a closed off run area which runs along part of the deck. They get their exercise that way. Also, there is a room with dogs toys, etc. that they can go in. You can visit the pet during these times and play with him/her. Talk with you travel agent who can arrange for the pet to travel with you in the kennels. They are not allowed in any other area of the ship. The cost at that time was $500.

As cusly said above, we took our cat round trip transatlantic last May,June.

Cunard's Kimberly Baldwin, Kennel Reservation Specialist (661.284.4874, kbaldwin@cunard.com) promtly provided all the information we needed. Of course, we had almost zero paper work burden because our cat never left the ship. You will have to comply with the full blown Pet Travel Scheme (PETS); which is, briefly:

The cat or dog must have been:

- Fitted with a microchip

- Vaccinated against rabies

- Satisfactory blood tested

- Issued with an official PETS certificate, PET Passport or 3rd Country Certificate

- Treated against ticks and tapeworm not more than 48 hours before checkin and issued with an official certificate of treatment.

We were the only roundtrippers, the four owners of the five dogs who left at Southampton never complained that the paper work was excessive. A couple mentioned that is was a lot easier than a few years ago when Britain required quarantine.

The kennelman (Robinson Santillo last year) kept the kennels, adjacent play room, and excersize deck spotless and scentless. We paid $300 for a small (27"H x 35"D X 30"L) cage one way.

Your dog will bless you forever for not inflicting air travel.

Very interesting- I always thought that you could only take a pet one way, I did not realize that your pet could make the round trip voyage with you- Is this only for Transatlantic or could your pet take, say one of the Caribbean trips as long as they don't leave the ship untill they return to the US?

They say transatlantic only, but there were several dogs and cats on our Panama cruise (Which was RT NYC)

So there are definitely exceptions made. Perhaps the answer is to check with the Kennelman, as posted above. Cunard land doesn't seem to have a clue sometimes/

Karie,

who thinks she will not take her six cats with her anywhere, though at time, I think we would have been better off to leave them home and check ourselves in to their kennel. For the cost, they must have been in the Taj Mahal!
