Cool Cruiser

Wee Jimmy is back from vacation and on the Conquest again."

Hi Conquistadora29,

We will also be on the February 8, 2009 sailing of the Conquest. I can hardly wait!!! We were on the Conquest last month and Ralph Valente (Wee Jimmy) was the cruise director. He was very funny! He said he will be on the Conquest up until dry dock on January 18, 2009. After dry dock, beginning February 1, 2009, Kyle Post will be the cruise director on the Conquest. Ralph Valente (Wee Jimmy) will be be the cruise director on the Victory beginning March 1, 2009.

Hey Gang!!!

We are lloking at booking the Conquest for the end of May or sometime in June. I know it's not the best time to book, but my husband and I teach, so we have to travel during breaks. We have two families that will be traveling from central Mississippi to Galveston. We have not booked yet, but we are trying to get everything in order before hand. We will be driving in on Saturday before the cruise leaves on Sunday. Does anybody out there have any hotel suggestions for Saturday night. Also, I've read a lot about parking, and it seems somewhat confusing. I'm wondering how different things are after the hurricane. I'm used to cruising out of New Orleans, so all of this is new--the ship, the travel--EVERYTHING!!! Any help/information that you could give would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi teachin4cruisemoney,

You might get some of your answers for hotel suggestions and parking information from the galveston.com website. On their website, if you click on the link at the top "What To Do", there is a drop down menu and it has a link "Cruising from Galveston". That link will provide you with information about the three parking choices: Port Of Galveston, EZ Cruise Parking, and Lighthouse Parking. Also, if you prefer, it has a link where you can choose a hotel/motel that also provides cruise parking.

Galveston was damaged badly by Hurricane Ike. Some hotels/restaurants have still not reopened. Since many residents also received substantial damage, some are still living in the available hotels/motels open along with FEMA personnel and contractors. Currently, there is a lot of work going on in Galveston. According to the mayor, it may be up to five years before the city gets back to "normal'. If you will check under the Cruise Critic "Gulf Coast Departures" forum there are some people that live and work on the Island that post answers to the threads quite regularly. They also post current pictures showing what is going on in Galveston.

We have sailed on the Conquest since the hurricane, and have had no problems. We have two more cruises scheduled on the Conquest before May. From talking with other cruisers traveling to Galveston, the main problem since the hurricane has been finding hotel/motel rooms. It is getting better each month as more hotels/motels reopen. Most have had to check and recheck prior to their cruises to see if rooms they had booked are available. By the time you sail in May/June is should be better.

Hope this helps.:)

Does anyone know if we have the use of the mini fridge for our own personal soft drinks? My mom is a TAB drinker and of course bringing her own with her. (thank goodness Carnival allows it!)

But, she'd like them to be cold on the cruise - so is there a mini fridge in the room and if so, room to add our own items?

Thanks! 6 days until we sail on the conquest!!!!

Yes Tracey,

When you arrive you can ask for your room steward to unlock and remove all the liquor and leave it empty/open for you!

Remember, be good to your stewards and they will be good to you! :D

All cabins on Conquest have the mini-bars (little fridges). It will as I guess you know, be filled with items for sale. You can ask your room steward to remove them. He may do so, or he may tell you he isn't allowed to as he has nowhere to store the items. Both have happened to us. If he won't remove the items, tell him you are going to store some things on a shelf in the closet so you can put your own personal items in the fridge. Tell him not to replace the items and not to bill your room. Our steward had no problem doing this for us.

The fridge will keep items at a temperature in the low 40's. It will require alot of time to cool warm items to this temperature. If you remove all the cold items and load the box up with warm items they will take the entire week to cool! Do Not Do This. My suggestion is to only remove a few items to make room for what you need. Having alot of cold items in the fridge will help cool a few warm items faster.

What we do is bring a small cooler that we can carry with a shoulder strap, the kind that has rrom for six to eight cans. When our room steward greets us I show him the cooler and ask him to keep it filled with ice. I can cool several cans in a short period of time. I then transfer them to the fridge. We bring the small cooler with us on our shore excursions anyway so we always have cold drinks. It's nice to have cold drinks in the fridge also as the ice is about melted by the time we return from a shore trip. If you do this you will never have any shortage of cold drinks in your cabin.

Can someone tell me about the speciality restaurants on Conquest? We're going to be on her in September and we've never done the speciality restaurants before and might like to do it on Conquest.

we did not eat in the supper "club" but heard fabulous reviews from others that did. now i wish he had.

If you are driving down from Houston, exit 45 south at Nasa Road 1 and on the south west corner there is/was a Fiesta liquor store. They have a decent selection there too or you could stop at the grocery store on 61st if Palm's liquor is not opened in that strip, yet.

The Fiesta Liquor is gone. There is a Specs in the Kroger Shopping Center at FM 518 in League City just one exit south. It is located on the north bound feeder. Exit FM 518 go under the freeway. The entrance into the shopping center is to your right.

We sailed on the Ecstasy in December and stayed at the Galveston on the Beach Holiday Inn. They have a park and cruise package where you leave your car in the hotel lot and the hotel provides shuttle service to and from the ship. We have used the same hotel before and after hurricane Ike and will stay there again for our next cruise.

People also stay at the Harbor House hotel, but I think they require a two night stay (Not for sure, best to call them).

Counting the days till I sail the Conquet again for the third time. It's been awhile since I have cruised on her so I am really excited to be going some place different on March 15, 2009 and this will also mark #10 to cruise with Carnival.

Interesting! I did not know that. When we were on the Conquest in 2005, they had the Vacation Club thing, but we never really checked into it. Is that the same thing?

Formal nights have always been Monday and Thursday onboard Conquest. On the new itinerary Friday and Saturday are sea days so it would make sense to have the second formal night on Friday night, but that doesn't mean it will be moved.

(yes...I know, elegant casual....not formal)

My DH and I are sailing 7/19/09. We were thinking of flying out a day early so we can avoid the stress of flying on the sailing date. I need some suggestions on which hotels are clean and reasonable?

We were also thinking of just renting a car at the airport and dropping it off at the pier. Has anybody done this?

One more question, if we rent the car we would probably get a shuttle or car back to the airport. Any Suggestions?

ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.:):):)

Thanks, Tara

I've read on several boards that it's a good idea to wait until you go ashore and find an Internet cafe to do whatever you need to do on the computer rather than using expensive minutes on board the ship. Does anyone have any tips on where to find a good Internet cafe at any of the Conquest's ports (Jamaica, Cayman. Cozumel). I'd rather spend my money enjoying a couple of drinks instead of checking e-mail at a buck a minute.

EZ? Never again!! Stolen hubcaps and TERRIBLE customer service after the fact.

It's Dolphin II for us...they're great and never a problem.

Can you tell me where Dolphin II is or how to get a hold of them? I looked for them on the Galveston website but found nothing. Thanks.

Does anyone know which ports we tender at?

Is it worth getting off in Jamaica?

We were going to do Sunset Beach but they raised the price from $40 to $60? Is it worth $60?

Thanks everyone!!!

The only port that is tendered at is Grand Cayman. Jamaica and Cozumel you arrive on a pier.

Getting off in Jamaica...well that is highly debateable. Depending what you do, where you go you will find many have different experiences there. Some wouldnt leave the boat if you paid them, some people have the time of their lives in Jamaica so like I said its up in the air.

Last year on the conquest, we got off got taken on a "tour" of the island from a taxi driver who said it would be an hour tour of the highlights of MoBay and would cost $20 bucks. Well after 20 minutes of being driven through the ghettos of MoBo and sitting in traffic we were told tour is over and charge was $45 now. I was not going to argue or start a riot over it so we got screwed and moved on. In a gift shop we bought my wife a purse that we finally haggled the price down to $40 bucks, the credit card was swiped I go to sign and the total says $60. Again not worth it to fight, just be prepared for those kind of tourist traps. We finally settled at doctors cove beach, very nice and quiet, inexpensive as well. Of course random jamaican men came by every 30 minutes or so selling drugs. It was a nice place, we are going again in a few weeks we will get off, go right to the beach, and after right back on. Just have your guard up, your in a foreign country and they will do almost anything to make a buck from you.
