Rooms Near Anchor Closet?

How can you find out if your room is near the Anchor closet or not? We're on the Navigator deck 6 Balcony? Of course if we are we will just have to partake in more than usual," Drum Rinks".:D

When we were on either the 2nd or 3rd floor we heard the anchor, but you will hear nothing on deck 6. The first morning DH had to peel me off the ceiling!!!

Shown below is a photo of the port side anchor deployed off Belize (Explorer of the Seas). The anchor locker is just inside the slot where the anchor rests when retracted against the hull.

There aren't any passenger cabins right near the storage area for the chain itself, but a massively heavy chain like that spooling around heavy winches (metal clanging on metal) can resonate to a certain extent. Wouldn't worry about it.

The anchors are not deployed while tied up at a pier. They use mooring lines for that. And some "anchorages" are places where they don't even drop the anchor at all. Instead they use the ships automated GPS system to optimize the propulsion systems and keep the ship sitting precisely in place for as long as they want. We did that off Grand Cayman. Think of the damage to the ocean floor continuous anchor dragging can do week after week...

Here's a closeup of the anchor closet...with anchor.:D It does make a lot of noise when they drop it, but surprisingly..you don't hear it much in most of the cabins. Sue may be right that it is noisier on lower decks. We have been above it, and hardly heard it.

On the lower deck forwards, there is usually more noise while docking and sailway.

This is not necessarily from dropping the anchor as this is quite rare. As mentioned above the Anchor is only dropped at tender ports and even then sometimes they don´t use the anchor but the DPS (Dynamic Positioning System) instead.

Much of the noise come from the Bow Thrusters. These are like hoge tunnels in the bottom side of the ship with propellers in them and they are used to move the ship sideway.

The use of these is noisy too. Of course they are used for docking procedure in the morning and sailway in the afternoon.

At tender ports, using the DPS they can be in use every couple of minutes to keep the ship on spot.

We know that anchors are big, but that picture is worth a thousand words - that anchor is BIG!!!

RalaI thought the newer ships have some kind of system where there is no anchor to drop? I don't know the technicalities of it , but maybe someone else can explain?

Just scroll up a bit to see more info about anchorless "parking".

All ships require anchors. But when and where they use them is another matter. In environmentally sensitive areas smaller boats will actually use a diver to place the anchor by hand in a damage-free manner...but (esp after viewing the pic above) that would be tricky with a ship's anchor.
