Can you only get an upgrade if you book a guarantee?

Free upgrades don't happen much anymore. I've done 48 cruises and I've only gotten one upgrade. Don't book a cabin you know you're not happy with, hoping you'll get an upgrade---it just doesn't happen that often. Plus, if you book a guarantee, you won't see a huge upgrade, if any. Usually, if you book an inside, any upgrade will be to another inside, perhaps in a better location. You won't see a balcony upgrade if you only book an inside guarantee. You might get a porthole upgrade, but nothing more.

I got my cabin # on my April cruise and sure would love a higher level lol.

Have my fingers crossed, but not really thinking there is much hope but folks keep saying it happens.

I booked a guarantee, but they put me down on the lowest level of cabins lol. hahahhahaha serves me right huh? The price was right and we will have fun no matter what.

We cruised Liberty this past Valentine's week, and in our roll call was a gentleman who had booked a particular balcony cabin (he chose the room, did not book guarantee). When he checked on his reservation (I think he was about to book an excursion), he noticed his cabin number had changed. They had upgraded him to a suite. He called and insisted that he get his room he had chosen back, and after a little hell being raised, he got his original cabin back. It does happen, how often I'm not sure, that was the first time I'd ever heard of that happening, but evidently, it does happen...................I would have kept the suite:p but that's me.

Hi. sorry to disagree with a previous poster. but good upgrades do happen. We were on the Golden Princess in Nov. doing a Transatlantic. We paid for a Outside Window cabin, and were asked if we would like an upgrade . I said no , as I had spent time choosing our cabin and did not want to be stuck with something no one else wanted .My hubby said yes. Fortunately , he said "take a chance ". so we did and had a lovely BALCONY cabin, on the pool deck. It was great for a 17 day cruise, but it did not take me long to learn NOT TO TELL anyone about it, especially people who had paid for balconies.!! :)

Yep, we were upgraded from side by side Oceanviews to side by side Verandah suites on Inspiration. Didn't know about it until we were checking in. Unfortuantely, our luggage was tagged and checked for the "previous" rooms, so we had to go round up our bags. Other than that, woo hoo! :)

Our first cruise, in 1997 on the Sun Princess, we were booked in an outside guarantee and were upgraded to a balcony in the center of the ship! We thought they did it because it was our honeymoon, but who really knows. As the last person mentioned, our bags went to the original room and took a few extra hours to find us. No big deal

:D just found out we have been upgraded to an oceanview(not porthole) and originally booked an inside guarantee..so we got more than we bargained for.not to mention i booked early and the price i paid is still cheaper than the lowest price they are advertising now.maybe i can get even luckier and the price will go below what we have paid and i can get an OBC.nothing like saving a little money for the casinos or excursions...

Kitty9 , you are doing somthing wrong, we have only cruised 4 times and been upgraded twice. Once from and inside guarantee to an outside, and the next time from an outside to a balcony!

This time we had to mark our reservation no upgrade as we are linked to an inside cabin our kids will be in( we booked the balcony across the hall)
