Cricky Posted February 27, 2007 #2 Share Posted February 27, 2007 Can you use just cash on a cruise? No money on the S&S card just straight cash for everything. I searched for this answer for a couple of days, couldn't find anything. TIA. Sorry to say, but no. They are not set up to handle cash on the ships. If you are like me I like to use only cash when I am traveling. It just seems more real and easier to budget. If you do not have a credit card that you can use they will allow you to put a cash deposit on your S&S card when you check in. ( I believe it is a minnimum of 300 PP) Anything left over at the end of the cruise will be returned to you.
CaptData Posted February 27, 2007 #3 Share Posted February 27, 2007 I perfer cash too. As above the answer is no. What I do is I bring Traveller's checks and put down $250.00 the first day right after I board. Then I am free to do what I want. The rest of the checks go in the room safe. If I need to I just fill up my account whenever it gets below $50.00. On the last night after 11 PM I just go and pay what I own or get what they owe me (0 balance). Then I go to bed. If I need cash for Shore Ex I bring a check down and the Front Desk will give me the amount (ask for small bills). Tips are put on my ship board account and I make sure they are covered first. Have fun.

Thanks so much for all the help! On Carnival if you have a remaining balance you get a check in your mail box which you can cash at the pursers desk the last day. On Princess we had a balance but had to produce a CC to get the credit back- Was told if we didnt have the CC it will be mailed to me.
alphakitty Posted February 27, 2007 #7 Share Posted February 27, 2007 I checked on the Carnival website and you can use cash to secure your account on board. I remember my mom and dad doing this a couple of years ago. They didn't want to use a credit card. Here's the official word. Deposit with U.S. Currency or Traveler's Checks U.S. Currency and traveler's checks are accepted as a form of deposit to open a Sail & Sign Account at the start of the cruise. As the guest approaches the deposit limit, the Information Desk will notify the guest that additional money must be deposited. http://www.carnival.com/CMS/FAQs/Sail_And_Sign_On_Board_Account.aspx Oh, wait...I misread the question...sorry, my mistake! You can't buy with cash on the ship, but you can put it down on the account to begin with and then spend it down that way.
TracersQQ Posted February 27, 2007 #8 Share Posted February 27, 2007 If you have funds left on your card, they will give you a check, on the last night. I've been told that the Purser will cash this check. I have always cashed the check, after I got back home. No fee to cash travelers checks. You can add a cash deposit, to your card, on the first day. I've never had to put more, on my card, then the $10/day for tips - unless you prepay the gratuity. However, I always put the gratuity + $100 down, on the first day. Then I add, to the card, as I think is needed.
Garv816 Posted February 27, 2007 Author #9 Share Posted February 27, 2007 Alphakitty you did answer my question. I didn't think they would have anything about this on the site. I should have looked there too. So we'll just put the cash on the card and go that route. Thanks everybody!!

newmexicoNita Posted March 1, 2007 #11 Share Posted March 1, 2007 I think it has been explained pretty well: Some lines will require $250 up front, others more and yes, you get it back at the end of the ship. You can not pay for anything usuing cash on the ship except in the casino. There is no charge for cashing travelers checks. As for the amount up front, you will need to keep a close tab on what you are spending. If the deposit starts to disappear you will need to go to the purser and give them more cash. Believe they will let you know. Hope we have all helped with your question. NMNita
dkjretired Posted March 1, 2007 #12 Share Posted March 1, 2007 Personally, I would never use cash as there are too many reports of problems with bills and with a credit card I can always challenge it. I have seen reports of problems with bills even after people get home. Secondly, travelers checks are going the way of the telegram and many places are not accepting them anymore. The cruise ships do but other places are cutting back.

As for travelers checks our daughter lived in Poland for a couple of years 2003-2005. she said fewer and fewer places will take them. On our next trip to Vegas we will purchase some but think our days of using them are about to end. It is just a matter of convincing DH of that.
