Jewel...no Grand Atrium

I also love the HUGE atriums. Aesthetically soothing.

If one really needs more cabins for further crowding, suggest they build them up around the funnel(s), or, like they ruined the Norway, add a couple of new decks.

AMEN!!!!!!!! I enjoy the big atriums!

I guess I am, perhaps alone in my opinion, but who really cares? Yes, an atrium is lovely to look at, but certainly not going to make a difference to me on my sailing or how lovely the ship may or may not be. I do think sometimes the cruise lines have gotten carried away with what they think is beauty. I think much of it is gaudy or overdone at best. Give me good food, a clean, well laid out ship, decent entertainmnet, good, relaxed service with a friendly crew, a nice casino and yes, certainly some awe factor helps, but I don't care about glass elevators, atruims, etc.

CruisinMatt, BTW, why do you bother coming on the thread? I have rarely seen you write anything positive about NCL.

Thanks for dictating how a person should feel and think!

I love the large atriums! It does not surprise me that NCL is not in the business of building large atriums as they are basically taking any ounce of elegance and style out of cruising.

Just my opinion and I am entitled to it.

I agree with you, Matt. I have traveled extensively and do not think I am "easily impressed", but I do like the 6-7-8 story atriums on the cruise ships! They are light and airy and are a fun place to go and people watch!

To me, they are not "wasteful", or "bogus". I enjoy them and will be most disappointed if the future of ship building goes to small, cramped "lobby's", like you would find in a Holiday Inn or Best Western......

Also, my opinion! :)

I guess you don't read many of my posts. I've had many great cruises on NCL in the Caribbean and South America.

Are these boards only for postive comments?

Please stop harrassing me or I will report you!

I guess I am just one of those who really does not get overly excited about ship's decor in general. I have travelled enough and seen enough not to be easily "wowed". My first viewing the Parthenon, Ely Cathedral, the Golden Gate Bridge, Ste. Chapelle, Claquoit Sound - those were some "wow" moments. Atriums I can take or leave. On a ship, I care more about interesting ports, cleanliness, edible food and professional service.

If others like (or dislike) atriums - fine but atriums just don't affect me much.

Different things make or break a ship for people. I dont care about a large atrium but stopped sailing on the Dream and Wind because of the poor fitness centers. I love all aspects of thoses two ships, (ok, not the buffet) but have gotten used to the larger gyms on the newer ships. There are tons of ships out there. Pick the ship that is right for you.

I haven't been on my first NCL cruise yet, although the Pearl is booked but on the Carnival Miracle it had a huge atrium with glass elevators and gave you the Wow factor when you walked in. On the Caribbean Princess it was 3 floors with no Wow factor. After the first impression, you just get use to not having a tall atrium. But actually on the Carnival Miracle, you would walk past the picture window where the atrium was on the passenger cabin decks and it was a welcomed breakup of the long hallway and you could look down and see what has happening. I won't base booking a cruise on the Wow factors but it is interesting to see the different effects.

I don't think the gym would stop me either, but you are right about the older ships period. They were doing good to have a couple of bikes and maybe a tread mill. Is that why I don't exercise more? LOL

I could care less about a huge atrium (but then again I prefer smaller ships anyway - you'll NEVER find me on the mega-ships like Freedom, etc.). For us the atrium is just a passthrough on our way somewhere else - if we want to sit and relax, we do so in our cabin/balcony, or in a lounge/bar, by the pool etc.

A clean ship with a great crew, great food (and yes, we DO like the food on NCL) and great destinations are enough for us:)

Ditto what she said.:D (Except I do like the semi-big ships, like the Pearl or Jewel).

I guess since I now like both styles of atriums, I must be mentally unbalanced!

Me too. I'll go further and say that I don't care one way or the other. A soaring atrium is nice; a small atrium is fine. How it's laid out and the decor are far more important to me than how tall the atrium is or whether there are glass elevators. (JMHO, of course. If others are impressed by 5-deck high atriums, terrific; if others prefer shorter ones, also terrific.)

I agree Pete. I love a very nice large and open atrium. Adds to the ship IMHO. Now talk about a waste of space is that new lounge on the Pearl that looks like it came out of a brothel. As a matter of fact from the photos that I saw very little of that ship appealed to me.

Have actually seen her in person? I ask because I saw the pictures of the Jewel (very similar) prior to sailing her and thought ONG, what have they done? When we actually got on the ship it was a total different experience. Vibrant, busy and energitic yes, gaudy absolutely not. DH, who isn't the cruiser I am and doesn't get too turned on said, when seeing the ship, both outside and it "WOW" NMnita

I agree with you Nita. Taste is subjective. I found the Bliss Lounge to be funky, colorful, and fun-filled. We all have different opinions about these things. I suspect that's why the ships have more than one bar area/lounge on them. That way they can please the largest number of people possible.:D

LOL

Reminds me of when the Carnival Miracle came out, and the shiplickers there were saying the dining room didn't look as bad as in the pictures.

WRONG!!!!!

As they say Pete, a picture can tell a thousand words and what I saw of the Pearl told me a lot. I also had the Norwegian Jewel docked next to me in several ports back in December and I could not get past all of the grafitti that was painted on this ship. It was on the bow, down the promenade deck, on the aft area of the ship and even up around the pool area. Grafitti overload. It made me not want to try that ship. I guess some like it and more power to them.

I don't especially like it! But if you're on the ship, you see less of it than if you're on another ship docked nearby. Maybe that's part of the reason why I enjoyed being on the Jewel so much :D . Give it a try.

The Hull "Art" is not a favorite of mine either. But when you have so many ships of the same class it more easily indentifies them.

After saying I was not crazy about the hull art I remembered that I had a purchased a set of 8 glasses on my last Jewel sailing. Each one has the art of a different NCL/NCLA ship. They are kind of cool, (and dishwasher safe..lol).

Me too!

We loved the Jewel:)

Though, I did enjoy seeing Goofy hanging off the Disney ship.

Of course, I wasn't on her with all of those kids:eek:
