JBVols Posted March 13, 2007 #1 Share Posted March 13, 2007 I know this probably a stupid question but does it matter which way you go on the Amsterdam to Budapest river cruise? We are booked on the Amadeus river cruise next year on the July 5, 2008 from Budapest to Amsterdam. We had requested the July 19 sailing from Amsterdam to Budapest but it was sold out to a charter. pacmom Posted March 13, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 13, 2007 Not a stupid question at all. Weather travels from west to east--A-B. If it is raining when you leave Amesterdam, you will have the rain for a good bit of the trip. If you have rain in Budapest, your next stop to the west probably won't have rain. We took a trip from the Black Sea to Ames. a few years ago and it was wonderful. We were on Uniworld, but just about all the English speaking trips are on the same level. You will have a wonderful time watching the scenery, plus it will be a shorter trip home--ending in Ames. Go a day or two early to really enjoy Budapest and get over jet lag. Travel safely and enjoy. rogerdawhip Posted March 13, 2007 #4 Share Posted March 13, 2007 I have traveled in both directions and prefer the Budapest to Amsterdam route. Due to the strong current on the Rhine we spend less time in some stops going upstream. The current did not seem to effect the Danubve as much. Plus, traveling through the Rhine Gorge and it's castles seemed better towards the end of the cruise then the beginning.
EURiverCruiser Posted March 13, 2007 #5 Share Posted March 13, 2007 The rule of the thumb is that you travel about 1/3 faster, when you sail downstream than when you sail upstream. With the AMS-BUD or BUD-AMS arrangement, you want to look into the planning in greater detail and make sure that the program really addresses your priorities. Rare steamboats Posted March 14, 2007 #7 Share Posted March 14, 2007 Basel to Amsterdam is more or less going South to North. The O.P. talked about East - West. Usually the weather might move more from North to South so you might be fine. But noone can predict the weather :D ! steamboats
