Restaurants in Amsterdam

Recommended Posts

I was in Amsterdam in November and had an amazing dinner in an Indonesian restaurant. It was a cozy place for locals, hardly any tourists there (except us) and the food was to die for. We had the Reistafel, which is your own private buffet of Indonesian specialties in varying degrees of spicyness. Most are in the normal range, I remember only one dish that was too hot to handle.

We made reservations. Their number is: +31 206 642 013

Hope, I could help you,

Amsterdam has a nice collection of Indonesian restaurants, as it was once a port of the Royal Kingdom. If you order "rijsttafel" you will have plenty of various dishes.

City center you will find Indrapura on Rembrandtsplein, near Rijksmuseum there is Sama Sebo -(this one is closed on Sundays). Advance reservations are recommanded.

Another option is the wine/cheese or the dinner canalcruises in the evening. http://www.amsterdamcitytours.com/boat-tours.html

In Pasta en Basta: http://www.pastaebasta.nl/ you find will singing waiters that serve italian dishes.

There is such a wide variety in Restaurants, like Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, French, Spanish, Mexican etc. it is difficult to name them.

I prefer the vending machines at Central Station: 1- or 2-Euro-Coins and you get all Dutch junk food you like... Hmmmmm... Frikandellen, Kroketten...

HeinBloed-- You are a hopeless romantic! :D Do I need a reservation?

Seebaer -- Thank you. I'm going to check this one out. I like the sound of it and DH loves spicy. I love the description -- neighborhood restaurant, local cuisine.

You might be more successful by checking the British Isle/Western Europe thread - as Amsterdam belongs to this part of the world.

HeinBloed -- Thanks for the tip. I will look there as well.

Ine, what is your favorite restaurant in Amsterdam--the one you most like going to? In the meantime, I am going to check out your suggestions. Thanks.

Hi, my husband, daughter and I were just in Amsterdam for Thanksgiving and we had our Tgiving meal at Indrapura. Food is important to us - we like interesting, delicious food - and Indrapura was recommended by our concierge (and I had already seen other recommendations for it, since I don't blindly take the advice of concierges if I can also match it with other info). We were very happy with the meal. Reasonable price. Nice location.

NJBelle -- Thank you for the recommendation! Indrapura goes into my notebook immediately.

Where else did you eat while you were there? Any other suggestions since we will be there for a few days?

Of the Indonesian Restaurants it is Indrapura and Sama Sebo (near Rijksmuseum - this one is often very crowded, make reservations, closed on Sundays).

A very different Restaurant is "Moeders" -

http://www.moeders.com/ more or less local dutch dishes and at the start of the Restaurant people were asked to bring plates, so no standard place.

In the news much, since it started as one of 5 Restaurants to win a large amount is Restaurants Suisse (didnot win, but was one of the 3 at the end)

Also have a look at this site on which you can find various restaurants by district. Often with notes of people who dined there:

Hi, one other place we ate while in Amsterdam is right down the street from the Anne Frank House: The Pancake Bakery at Prinsengracht 191. It is a dark, crowded kind of place and pretty busy - but the pancakes, both savory and sweet, are just delicious. Pretty cheap, too. We had lunch there before going to AF House and that worked out fine for us.

Have fun.

Thanks for the tip! Pancakes are already part of the plan. Now I have a destination.:)
