"Can I let my baby swim in the pool?" (The Ultimate 'Diaper' Thread)...

Recommended Posts

What about the germs on most surfaces we touch every day? And ladies, the bottom of our purses are a breeding ground... Just think about the times we set them on the ground not knowing whats been there before. At lease the hot tubs are treated...

True ... there are germs on most (all) surfaces we touch each day, but here it seems the discussion is focusing on hot tubs and pools. We can really sound off on germs in general, I'm sure.

I'm mixed on the topic. I do not have a hot tub where I live now, but sometimes can't resist getting in one that appears to be VERY clean (in my mind/in appearance). I have never used one on board a ship - they are seemingly full all the time! Yes, they are drained and cleaned daily, but still ... what about that nasty, hairy guy drinking beer all day and maybe he went to the bathroom and didn't wipe too well .... That's my biggest gross out factor. E. Coli and fecal ... yuck, gag, EWWWWWWW.

While vacationing at a resort, there was a big elaborate water play/pool area for small kids/toddlers/babies only. (No kid under 7 allowed). A "pool patrol" constantly walked the perimeter watching for poopy diapers, pee pants and such and would promptly close the pool for sanitization if needed. All parents were made aware of this and really monitored their kid's cleanliness. Pretty good idea!?

You can't count on this being the last diaper thread, it's been going on for years.

That is because there will always be some parent with a one year old who will have a totally ruined cruise if not allowed to get in the pool. Of course, the fact that this little person will have no memory, what so ever, of the cruise in the first place is totally irrelivant.

But surely the one in the picture was provided to those youngsters.... Perhaps its only certain ships....

If a parent lets a baby in the pool with a dirty diaper...THEY should be made to clean the pool IMHO!

No , They should be made to swim in the pool!!!!!!

Oh BLECH! Funny, yes, but BLECH!

I'm a second grade teacher, so there's little that can COMPLETELY gross me out, but diapers in pools REALLY gross me out. I don't swim in the pools on board anyway, but it's still gross.

I WILL think twice about walking around upper deck without shoes on now. I'll just deal with the stupid looking sandal tan. :) Bleach and cleaners dumped out onto the deck can't be terribly good on my delicate little tootsies either. Ha ha. Oh wait, I live on a farm and walk around barefoot, maybe my tootsies aren't THAT sensitive.

Fun thread! THANKS for the pictures. They made me giggle. :D

surely the one in the pic was NOT provided by the the ship regardless what ship it is.. NO SHIP WOULD DO THAT..

I have heard so many times that parents should bring a blow up pool, the one in the pic is a bit bigger than I would have imagined someone bringing, and I have always said,, where do they dump the water.. It only made sense that they dump it on the deck. now what about those who bring one and put it on their balcony? LOOK OUT BELOW! Wow,, I cannot imagine it( Or do not want to imagine it)

TO THE OP: Thanks for the pics. .they are great

I have so many questions about that since I have never seen it before.

How did the passenger pack it? That pool is huge!

If it was a passenger's pool, why were ship's crew tending to it?

How did they fill it, and from what water source....salt or fresh?

How did they find so many empty deck chairs in the front row to put the pool there?

It was RC's pool.

Because it was RC's pool! They tended to it all week. i did NOT see one particular family use the pool.

i did not see, it was out there every sea day, filled up already. about 3 or 4 they would drain it.

How did they find so many empty deck chairs in the front row to put the pool there?

again, pool was aready out there when i would get out there about 9 or 10am.

My only question is *whose* health laws?

Not in a *diaper*, but in a *swim* diaper (which are incredibly tight, especially if you use the reusable ones found at Target under the brand iSwim), my son was completely allowed to swim in every public pool we've been to, and all of the YMCAs around here with pools offer baby and toddler swim classes, which require and allow swim diapers (not regular dipes). Obviously not WA state law. :)

Or CA state law, as he swam in public pools there.

What country is RCI based out of?

So I wonder what agency set up that law?

Or, I wonder if it's a law for the unchlorinated pools...ah, but they don't mention that, do they? Wonder how many people who don't cruise CC would tweak out if they found out the ship pools were unchlorinated?

Hey wait, if they aren't chlorinated, how did the crew have chlorine to dump into the baby pool?

Before I get jumped on, we didn't take a cruise with DS when he was bitty BECAUSE of the pool issue. And money, but whatever. :p We take him all sorts of places, even before he'd have memories, simply because we don't feel like living in a bubble, not creating memories for OURSELVES, until he's old enough. Now he's beyond old enough, and started "training" himself at 1.5 years (I absolutely could have taken him into a pool from then without ANY diaper, because his "signals" were obvious and ahead-of-time) and finished less than a year later, and he remembers our Disney trip from when he was a new 2....

But the point is, we mainly didn't take a cruise yet because I didn't want to run into the issues of pools, and we wouldn't have even been able to get NEAR a pool deck with him if he wasn't able to get in...he's been half my height (and now he's even taller) since he was 1 and change, and learned the laws of physics involving fulcrums and leverage when he was 11 months old (pushed me over while I was sitting)....just wouldn't have been possible without much yelping (from him, too!) if he even saw a glimpse of a pool. :p

Love that big pool, though.

And look at that kiddo's tanline!

Wish they would put kiddy pool on all ships.

And I agree the parents with the baby with a dirty diaper should clean the pool. Bet that they would be the first to complain about norovirus but what makes diapers dirty (to be delicate) is often a cause of norovirus (why people who don't wash hands spead that kind of germs).

The chemicals in a pool are what keep the germs at bay. I don't know about salt water but I have an in-ground swimming pool I treat with chlorine. Contrary to popular belief, a well maintained clean pool will not smell like chlorine or burn your eyes. Those are indications of combined chlorine in the water. When the chlorine encounters organic substances like tanning oil or urine, it combines with it, that's how the chlorine keeps your pool clean (and one of the reasons why you have to keep adding chlorine).

So an indication that people have been peeing in a pool is that it smells strongly of chlorine.

RC should have the right to keep toddlers in diapers out of the pool no matter what country's flag it sails under. With all the Roto and Noro viruses floating around the ship in general, and all those passengers on board, it's a matter of good health practices, and I commend them. I would not be happy to be quarantined in my cabin for 2-3 days if an out break occurred.

Teeeheeee....funniest thread EVER!! :p

Seriously. Some parents actually think because they deal w/baby feces on a daily basis that the rest of us surely won't mind swimming with it. :D

Laura

Some people think that because their world revolves around their little cherub that the rest of our worlds revolve around their little cherub, too.

Our local country club charges the parents for draining the pool and cleaning after diaper mishaps. It takes the club about a week and costs about $10,000. They had two incidents in one year before they started this policy, no incidents since.

....For examples sake...let's say a baby was wearing one of these super tight “swim” diapers and did not go number 1 or number 2 while in the pool for about 30 minutes…Are you telling me these “swim” diapers keep the skin inside the “swim” diapers bone dry?

If water does get inside, then it means it can get outside. If this baby had a dookie inside, water goes in...mixes a little...water comes back out...sounds like the fecal teabag mentioned before on CC. Bleh

...On another note....is the last picture treading on child porn laws...rofl
