I was drugged in Costa Maya - Majahual - BEWARE!!

Recommended Posts

How very scary, and thanks for coming here to alert people to the possible dangers.

I did look up the drug (was unfamiliar with the name) and found this info on Wikipedia:

In recent news it has been discovered that scientists can now detect flunitrazepam and related compounds in urine at least up to 5 days after administration of a single dose of Rohypnol and up to a month in hair.

Hopefully your doctor will be able to test and tell you for sure, for your own peace of mind.

Feel better!

Even though it is a temptation, we have never drank anything in port from anything but a bottle that we openned ourselves and have never left a drink unattended on port or on the ship. we are just paranoid that way, i guess. This will be our 7th cruise and our 1st to europe--and expect to follow our past decision when we try their marvelous wine. We will watch it be openned at our table. I am a nurse and have read too much on this subject.Better safe than sorry.

Smart you are. I am also a nurse and suddenly lost all paranoia after the first drink. I thought it was safe to have a bartender make my drink. Our first server demanded more money for a tip after we paid and tipped. I happily gave him $5 more to make him happy. I thought I was in control though. I got a $20 massage for an hour. I gave her a $20 tip, too. I thought I was in control then, too. I deteriorated rapidly.

Guaranteed it wasn't our cc friend. Not a chance. I don't do sun either. I've had melanoma. I didn't go in the ocean or the pool even once. I have no tan. I had 2 drinks. I drank a LOT more tequila last August at the cooking cuisine excursion in Cozumel and never felt like this. Hangovers don't last 4 days either. I know people are drugged in the USA. I wouldn't let someone make my drink other than a bartender. I just think it's highly unlikely the bartender at chilis or outback (I don't go to S. Beach since I'm not a tourist) will drug me. I don't blame majahual. I blame the person in majahual who did it. And me for drinking anything there. Ny cc aquaintance did not do it. He is now a friend. He got us back to the ship in one piece.

I didn't know it was only two drinks. Your cautionary tale applies to just about anywhere. I was only noting that Maha is probably no more or less prone to these shenanigans that the next place. Again, my best hopes for your speedy recovery, and the knowledge that you may well be saving others from a similar and possibly worse fate should help make you feel a little better.

so sorry to hear this - thanks for posting. keep in mind it may not have been the bartender either - could have been whoever mixed the sour mix, or someone could have put something in the tequila bottle before your bartender even came along (even the night before if you were drinking early in the day). Or, if your margaritas were from a frozen drink machine, it could have been anyone who had access. hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for this Ruth. I hope the wikipedia is right since I've found wrong info there about my own child's school. I wondered about hair. If I don't hear from the clinic soon I will call them back. I missed the "official" 72 hours when by the time I got home and off the plane. I wish I could have thought what to do when I was on the ship. I really messed up by not seeing the ship's doctor.

Wow! I am sorry to hear what happened to you.

I have been to the Cat's Meow and loved it. It is owned by a Canadian woman who takes great pride in her business. She offers kitchen tours. I do not know the place beyond there. I know everyone is upset, but before rushing to judgement, what else could have happened?

It seems more needs to be answered.

As a nurse, I recommend you go to your local Emergency Room ASAP rather than wait for your own physician tomorrow. They can test you and not let another 24 hours pass.

I know (from personal experience) back in the 80's bars in Mexico would make your margarita's with 190 proof grain alcohol instead of tequila. I unsuspectingly drank an average sized margarita and couldn't walk to get a cab. That was my one and only drink, luckily I had friends with me who had only had beer. This however sounds like rohypnol. It certainly goes to show you that when you're in a foreign country you should never go out on the town alone. There definitely is strength in numbers. I'm glad you were only robbed and not something much worse. I hope you start feeling better quickly!

I am so sorry to hear about this...heck the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up reading what happened..I am sooo glad you are home and I wish you a very speedy recovery...gawd girl you are lucky you got back on the ship in one piece.

I think it is very hard to detect rohypnol...they only time I have heard of it is on TV ...hope this doesnt sound really dumb but I am trying to recall a TV programme on how they could find prove it was rohypnol.

Gina ..I dont know what else to say..I am really in shock here...I am at a loss for words....(yea yea I know doesnt happen very often :o )

Postive thoughts winging their way to you from over the pond....and I hope you get back to normal soon...cause we love your happy/chatty posts on here.

Best wishes

it's also possible they used a cheap, high octane grain alcohol to make your drinks. there could have been chemical contaminants in that as well.

I know you'll never know for sure, but there are other possibilities than a deliberate drugging. And please don't think I am questioning you! Just thinking of all possiblities so we can all better protect ourselves.

I don't drink much on board. I even forgot to buy a foo foo drink on board the first day- or at all. :) I was fine all morning - Costa Maya was a later port - off the ship about 1pm. I did think it could have been a server. Who knows how many people have access to the ingredients, you are right. I can blame no one but myself for drinking. I have not had a drink since that day. Someone on board said I should have a drink the next day - it might make me feel better. Yea, right. I don't think so. The drinks in Majahual are fresh made, not frozen. They even have lime pulp in them.

You later clarified that the he with you and your friend was simply a CC acquaintance. I would not be so quick to completely exhonerate this person. It would be unusual that someone would attempt to drug women that were escorted by a man. There are too many unescorted tartgets, and these drugs aren't free.

I think this would be a legitimate point. 2 women alone with a man they just met on a cruise makes much more sense to me than some random bartender.

Either way sorry for whatever happened to you.

mommabean,

First I am so very sorry this has happened to you. We have cruised to Mexico twice. Both times I remember the ships daily paper stressed to be very careful when buying drinks in port.

Always advised canned soda's and beer you open yourself to be safe. For mixed drinks stay with the more well known touristy places. What you are talking about is what the paper warned could happen with some drinks.

Boy you really had some cruise here with things going wrong. I would be upset also.

I really messed up by not seeing the ship's doctor.

Well, you would have been up to your neck in medical bills if you had  . My wife got very sick on the last day of our Navigator cruise and went to the doctor thinking that since we had cruisecare, we wouldn't have to pay anything. Well, she was very wrong. It ended up that they put the bill on your Seapass account and THEN after you get home, you can contact them about being reimbursed. The total bill ended up costing almost as much as my cruise, nearly $5000 dollars and it took us months to get the money back.

I think I'll wait until I get back next time unless it is a total emergency.

Oh MommaBean,

I am so sorry to hear this! I hope that you feel better soon!

My husband and I went on a western caribbean cruise in January, and he contracted a wierd illness. We only got off the ship in Costa Maya and Grand Cayman. He went for all types of tests from January until April, when he was finally given a clean bill of health. Back in Tampa I wanted to check him into the hospital, but he refused. (men!!! ) Thank god you made it home safely, though. I will keep you in my prayers.

It's just that the rape treatment center told me they hear of this happening quite a bit in Mexico after cruises and it's not being talked about. When I am thinking clearly I am going to suggest to Greta on you know what station that she do an investigation. But if no one is reporting it or talking about it up to now, I don't think anyone cares. Someone said to me "what happens in Mexico stays in Mexico" They said that on the ship but I don't remember who. I was still out of it and laughed and said, "No, what happens in Mexico, stays in Las Vegas". I was a real piece of work - I don't remember who I was talking to then or what day. My sister and I laughed so hard as we pulled out stupid stuff we bought. Laughed??? Sad, isn't it. :( Sickening. We were too out of it to realize the issue at hand.

Please don't blame yourself!! You didn't cause this. Anyone who has two margaritas certainly doesn't deserve what you experienced!! :) I'm sure I speak for everyone "here" that we're just relieved you're ok.

This was probably part of my thinking, only I can't remember what I was thinking. I just remember being glad I was alive although I told someone they should push me overboard to make me feel better. I didn't think I was dying. I was glad I had my credit card and ID since it was in a different compartment. I thought drugs would stay in me for a week and seeing my doctor tomorrow would be good enough. I was thinking........just not with any sort of normal thought process.

So sorry to hear about this. Thanks so much for warning everyone else. Someone posted a similar story on cruise critic of their mother being drugged in Cozumel on one of the resort beaches and many were skeptical of the story when it was originally told. I think this proves the problem really does exist. Maybe others will now come forth with similar experiences. Thank god you made it hope safely.

Gina: So sorry to hear about this, please keep us posted with any updates...We have been to Costa Maya only once, but are heading back in January...We did not leave the port area though and spent some time at Mamasita's where I had a margarita which did not effect me...Take care and my prayers are with you...Later, Jill:cool:

Princess is getting it right with the warning. I have all my papers from on board and will go back and read them again. If it was there, I missed it. Since Princess is owned by Carnival it should be there, too. I wrote Carnival and told me. I let them know all I wanted was for them to very carefully warn cruisers before they get off the ship...just as you say Princess does.
