On the subject at hand, I had no problem with Celebrity's smoking policy. Being a non-smoker, the only area that was a problem for us was the casino.

Just got back from the Century TA. Smoking was somewhat a problem but not as bad as I've experienced in the past but there should be a more fair compromise... I've had expensive clothes burned on the millie.

If Celebrity were to offer the opportunity to enjoy morning coffee, a sunset cocktail, a midnight star-watch on our balcony, ... all without the disgusting stench of our neighbors' smoke, we will return to Celebrity. We miss Celebrity! We logged 10 cruises with this fine cruise line. Our last experience was just too much (neighbors were chain-smokers, always out on their balcony, it seemed.) We love to be outside enjoying the scenery and fresh air. We also love to sleep with the door open, listening to the soothing sounds of the ocean. On the last cruise, we couldn't, as our neighbors smoked into the wee hours of the morniing. We realize that this was simply bad luck. We had not had a problem as bad as this on our previous cruises. After this experience, though, it's just not worth the risk. We're going to book Azumara! (We would have anyway, out of curiousity.)

Now that I no longer smoke.......... (20 years) I notice the smell of smoke and find it very unpleasant. Thant said, I am amazed that given that smoking is allowed in all the cabins that there is not more of an odor. Only once have we had a cabin that one could tell had been smoked in by the previous occupants.

Well unless someone is going to put on a spiderman suit and patrol the outside of the ship I will always smoke on my balcony regardless of any smoking ban..........

There are always ways to discourage someone from smoking on a balcony.I agree a large seapass charge would work.It would be easy to prove.BT

Generally, I am a "live and let live" sort of person, but with regard to smoking, as an ex-smoker, (no zealot like a convert), I would be perfectly happy to ban all smoking from anyh public place. This being said, I know how difficult it is to forego, let along quit, the habit, so realistically, IMHO smoking should be permitted only in designated areas, clearly marked, and well contained.

 

Smoking in cabins and on verandahs should be restricted to one side of the ship.

 

As a one time boss of mine once said, "Go ahead an smoke in my office, I really don't care if you wish to commit suicide".

I'm not a smoker, but I think they should strictly define and enforce the smoking areas.

 

I'd like to see the whole casino smoke free, and as another poster suggested...one side of the ship for smokers only.

Using the balcony is a big part of my cruise and I hate having a smoker next-door. If the wind is right, the smoke goes all on my balcony. I would love to at least have one side of the ship where I could be sure not to have smoke with my breakfast.

I'm not sure it's viable, all those smokers on one side.....you'd have fireboats coming out to meet the ship at every port thinking it was burning! ;)

My preference would be to limit smoking only to outdoor areas on one side of the ship (including only balconies on one side of the ship) + the casino. Every experiment ever done on land or on sea has shown that casino revenues decrease if smoking is not allowed. People who don't like to be around smoke can choose to avoid the casino. While the reverse would be true if they banned smoking, that isn't fair to the cruiseline, as they would lose a bunch of money.

I'm not surprised. I know when Carnival Paradise was a non-smoking ship, its casino made something like 35% as much as the casinos on other Carnival ships. I'm sure that had a lot to do with why it is no longer a non-smoking ship!

Its like everything else, drinking and gambling are not a problem when done in moderation. Not everyone is addicted.

well, here in our town, smoking was banned in all restaurants and public buildings. At first, all the bar owners were afraid that they would lose business and really complained. (one bar owner is still complaining). Restaurants have not lost patrons, but GAINED business! No problem now with any of the bars, patrons just go outside in an inviting area provided. This ban has been in effect for over 3 years, and I must say, it is a pleasure to go to a smoke free restaurant.

I agree about the restaurants, it is a pleasure to go into restaurants in NJ and then we go to Pa where we are moving and there is no ban. Casinos's however are a little different and only time will tell..

Agreed. With casinos, even if the patrons were content to go outside and smoke, those minutes they were away from the machines/tables mean lost revenue. If they are gone for 10 minutes out of every hour (which is easily possible), that is a 16.67% drop in potential revenue for the casino. It's a big deal.
