Even though less than twenty-five percent of people in the United States still smoke, and the number is much lower for Americans who are well educated, it appears that the percentage is much higher for people who take Celebrity Cruises.

How do you come to that conclusion?

Hi Gillianrose :)

On this poll close to forty percent who voted don't want the smoking policy to change. In addition, the numbers were similar on other polls during the past year or so. Of course I realize this poll is not very scientific which is why I used the term "appear".

In light of the fact that Celebrity is considered to appeal to an upscale demographic, it surprises me that the percentage of Celebrity Cruisers who smoke is as high as it is.

Are you basing this percentage on the number of people who responded to this poll? If so, then this is a very small percentage of the actual cruisers onboard any given cruise.

Maybe the title of this thread caught the attention of more smokers, then would other titled threads...

I feel that it wrong to assume that everyone who voted to leave things be are smokers. Most Non-smokers have either a spouse, love one, family member, friend who smokes and may vote to stay the same out of respect for that person(s).-BT

Every time the smoking subject comes up, I feel guilty, it's not my fault, 'spontanious human combustion' is not a joke, it's hereditary, I watched my parents burst into flames, every time I start to smoke, I think, is this it, is this the end, but then somebody sprays me down, next time, you see someone smoking, don't be so quick to judge!

I voted to leave the policy as is--only because there was not an option to allow more smoking.;)

I do not smoke, neither does anyone in my family or anyone that I would cruise with. Even so, I DID vote to leave the policy as it is. So the number of people voting to leave the policy as is does not equate to number of people who smoke.

I would be more than happy to spray you down, but if the only thing I have available is a martini, well you can just forget it.

I find it very interesting that, even as more and more people vote in this poll, the ratio of votes stays just about the same. And it's not like it's 90% one way and only 10% the other. If it were me making the decision, based on the current poll data, I'd leave well enough alone although I personally prefer the Azamara policy.

Truth is, in all my Celebrity cruises, I've only been bothered by smoke once, so in my experience the current system does work.

Hmmmmmmmm, wonder if any smokers voted for stricter onboard smoking policies out of respect for their non-smoking spouse, loved one, etc.?

If they did, would that make them a hypocrite? They would want the ship to be more smoke free, but are unable to make themselves smoke for for their spouses sake.

I'm not saying it might not be the case.

Sorry folks (that includes obnoxious cigars) I am anti-smoking and proud of it!!!! If I can give up smoking anyone can. I was one of those rude people too, but I had to come to terms with it hurting not only myself but especially those I love as well as on the public where I inflicted my smoking habit. California has had a ban on smoking in bars, restaurants and other public places for a number of years...hasn't hurt any of those entities. It's time for the cruise industry to take a hard look at smoking policies.

Hi All,

Smoking is a real problem for those of us with breathing problems but I have been on Celebrity 12 times now and smoking is limited to one side of the public areas, where is it permitted, including the casino. We were on the Galaxy in January and again the casino was smoke free on one side. As far as Atlantic City news states profits down 7% but they also didn't mention the new slot parlors in the Philadelphia area. Are the Azumara ships smoke free. Cruiseladies2

Re the comment abt Michaels on Mercury--just another reason DH favors it. Imagine smoking outsdie aft after 9 in Alaska or Canada....As to Century--we were just on her & it is true that Michaels was used well but the libarary was fairly empty & an equally nice place for a lounge--why not move the books into Michaels as a library by day & piano bar at night & make the little library a smokers paradise.. Now we will get the library lovers into the fray!

PS: I am a non-smoker, tobacco hater but respect my DHs right to refuse to act in his best self-interest...(I have no choice really!)

Sure sorry to hear that you were one of those "rude people" ands I am sure that you are now a perfect lady.

the truth is we do not live in a perfect world and I resent being called rude just because i choose to use tobacco.

I have to say that it can be a crap-shoot; the first leg of our B2B on the Constellation, we had one of the coveted Aft Balconies; we also had cigar smokers on either side and above which almost ran us off of the thing.

Like they say, your experience may vary.....:)

That's first quarter losses which reflect the Pa casinos but does not reflect the smoking issue. The smoking ban didn't start until April 15.

This is cut and pasted from Azamara's FAQ:

Q.

Will smoking be allowed on these ships?

A.

Azamara Journey has two designated smoking areas. These areas are located in the aft section of the Looking Glass Lounge on the port side, and on the starboard forward section of the Pool Deck. Smoking areas have signs indicating that smoking is permitted there. All other areas of the ship are non-smoking. This includes Public Rooms, Restaurants, Pool Deck, Staterooms and Suites, Verandas and Halls. For the comfort of all of our guests, we request strict adherence to this policy, and thank all of our guests for their cooperation.

Very interesting thread and more importantly, with a few exceptions, a very nice discourse. I don't smoke and my DW and daughter have asthma but I also don't believe we should ban smoking on ships, restaurants, etc. It should be restricted so that most people, smokers and non-smokers alike, can enjoy most of the ship.

I work in a restuarant and occasionally during the day, there will be a group of smokers around me- huffing and puffing for hours. It affects me and other employees. My eyes start to burn and I have trouble breathing. So, I am thrilled that Maryland has banned smoking in all public places (as of January 1, 2008).
