Best way to get to Mobile

The Holiday was the first cruise that my family went on (all separately) and we all loved her. We would love to cruise on her again, but our problem is how to get to Mobile cheaply. We are traveling from Amarillo, TX and Denver. We have found a good deal for the cruise but so far the airfare from both areas is twice as high as the cruise itself.

Please help us. We want to go on the Holiday for our dad’s 70th birthday.

Thanks

We live in Pensacola and I know that it is sometimes cheaper to fly into Pensacola or New Orleans. Airtran flys into Pensacola very cheaply. Pensacola airport is about an hour from the Mobile cruise terminal. You would have to look into transportation from here. New Orleans is about 1 1/2 hours from Mobile. We have beautiful beaches in this area. You could stay a night or two before your cruise if needed.

My experience flying out of this area is that Mobile and Pensacola are usually fairly close in price. Checking New Orleans is a good idea. You might also try Gulfport. Good luck.

Rather than guessing, I chose arbitrary dates and did an Orbitz search.

Per person

Amarillo--Mobile, $365 AA

Amarillo--New Orleans, $264 AA

Amarillo--Pensacola, $326 multiple carriers

Denver--Mobile, $429 AA

Denver--New Orleans, $299 multiple carriers

Denver--Pensacola, $253 Continental

These fares, of course, apply only to the particular dates and flights I searched, but the trends are pretty obvious.

Good luck,

Doc

Mobile has a great airport, but there is no competition for the airlines so the airfare to here is a joke. Airtran flies into Pensacola and Gulfport. That would probably be your cheapest alternative. Getting to Mobile from either of those places will be the problem. You might give Mobile Bay Transportation a call at 251-633-5693 as they also have a branch in P'Cola as well, I think, and they may do shuttles between P'Cola and Mobile. Ask for Margie Wilcox. She is the owner. If you were a high roller and stayed at one of the casinos in Biloxi for a couple nights pre-cruise they would probably bring you over to Mobile in one of their limos. They pass through our little town at the state line all day, everyday headed to the Mobile airport with guests so they definitely know the way here.

For the difference in price you could drive to Galveston from Amarillo at least and save the price of the airfare. Its only $35 to park at EZCruise parking for 4 - 5 days Ecstasy. And the folks in Colorado you could pick them up at the airport in Houston?

when are you trying to go? They have a free upgrade sale going on now.

Thank you for all of your advice. We are looking around Feb. 2nd, that is my Dad’s 70th birthday. Although I leave in Texas it is a 14 hour drive for me to Galveston.

Thanks again.

I live in Texas too, and it might surprise you how fast you can drive down that ways. Id go in the day before of course and stay at one of the hotels where you can park your car for free for the week.

I drive to Lubbock quite often, isnt Amarillo about an hour north?

I guess I do have a lead foot!!!!

We stayed at the Comfort Inn Saraland before our April 28 Holiday cruise. About 15-20 minutes from the cruise terminal. And I agree, the Mobile terminal is the easiest one ever! We left Saraland on I-65 South and then took I-10 east ..the Canal street exit is two blocks from the entrance to the terminal.. right turns all the way....a breeze. I love the Mobile facility..friendly and efficient folks.

You may prefer to fly but we drove from Fort Worth to Port Canaveral for our cruise over the Super Bowl week. We did drive through Mobile. We left early (5:00 am) and drove to Shreveport and then south to Baton Rouge. Then we took I-12/10 thu Mobile and spent the night in Tallahassee. We got to Tallahassee at 7:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. our time). The way we went was Interstate highway all the way. It was a great drive if you like road trips. Whichever way you choose, hope you have a great cruise!!! Travelgirl
