Nobel and Resistance Museums

Which of these would you go to: the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo or the Nobel Museum in Stockholm; the Museum of Danish Resistance in Copenhagen or the Norwegian Resistance Museum in Oslo?

 

We are a family of five: two 16 year-olds and an 11 year-old, and we are all interested in WW2 and Nobel, but don't want to duplicate.

I can't speak to the Nobel question, but I definitely believe the Resistance Museum in Copenhagen has more to offer than the Norwegian Resistance Museum. I don't know that they duplicate, as I value the time I've spent in each, but on a cruise (with limited time) I'd probably only go to one.

 

It might come down to what else you want to do in each port. If your stay in Copenhagen looks like it will be very busy, you might want to visit the Norwegian Resistance Museum. Each is worthwhile, though (as I said) I'd choose the Danish Resistance Museum if I had to pick only one.

Hello. Maybe that Australian family is us??? My husband and son have a particularly strong interest in military history and yes, I have asked many questions re this. We have booked some specific private tours with an emphasis on this.

the Nobel Peace museum is the only one we visited of the ones you mentioned. It was very interesting giving the history of the Nobel Peace prize and interactive biographical information on the winners. Part of the museum is used for exhibit space, at the time we were there, a photographic exhibit filled that space. I assume the exhibits change on a regular basis.

 

We found the museum both interesting and moving. However, I am not sure how much interest it holds for the children -- the design and high tech side of the museum with the interactivity would interest them but I am not sure it would grab their attention unless they knew the personalities who have received the prize in the past. It's more of a place for contemplation.

 

If you have time while walking around Oslo, it is very convenient to pop in and walk thru the exhibits. In all we spent about an hour or less there.

 

If I had to choose something for the children, I would definitely take the ferry over to the Viking Ship and Fram museums. Both are awesome and the walk thru the residential neighborhoods from the dock and between the museums is also very nice. We did not know about the Fram before we went, but the thought of being frozen in polar ice was brought to life since you can actually go on the ship and down into the quarters where the crew lived and worked. The Kon-tiki museum is also very interesting, especially if you have read the books and now see how small these rafts/ships were.

Why not let the kids take a look at the websites for some of the museums mentioned on this thread and give their own input? They're more likely to enjoy seeing something they selected.

Definitely take the ferry across the harbour if you're going to any of the museums on the Bygdoy peninsula - don't take a ship's shorex - not necessary when it's so easy and less $$ to go on your own and you can spend as much or as little time as you wish in each venue.

If your children ski (or even if they don't) they may also enjoy visiting the Olympic ski jump at Holmenkollen - you can see it from the ship - view from the top is incredible - take the metro to get there - lots of good hiking in that area too

Also, don't know if was mentioned before (and too lazy to go back and look), but the Danish Resistance Museum is also within easy walking distance of Langeline where cruise ships usually (though not always) dock in Copenhagen.

Did you realize that the intrance to Copenhagens Resistance museum is FREE, the same is the National museum, the open air museum in the suburb of Lyngby and the Danish Music museum.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. It seems like the Danish Resistance museum is the way to go - however I'm going to have to tear my husband and kids away from Tivoli to do it!

 

Still not sure on the Nobel museums. We may just go to City Hall in Stockholm and see where the prizes are handed out. Might be a good compromise.
