items that are a must

Recommended Posts

Definitely bring a power strip. That's the one item I can't go without - you will need to charge cameras, battery packs, cell phones...and plug in hair dryers, curling irons, alarm clock, etc. Definitely worth it!

  • post it notes to leave a note for cabin mate and other's where you are at.
  • highlighter to highlight things you want to do in the Compass
  • clock
  • an empty duffel bag for all the stuff you bought
  • zip ties to tie your luggage shut (just in case they decide to look at your checked stuff they don't destroy it, they just have to cut the zip tie).

All of those things are necessary, except I think the alarm clock. You could always request a wake-up call.

My DW brought 2 colors of highlighters on our first cruise. Since then, we just keep them packed. Last thing each night, or first thing each morning, we get the Compass out and look it over. Anything in yellow is stuff I'm interested in. Anything in pink is the stuff we're really going to do. Come to think of it, I guess 1 color really would do us just fine!

The post it notes were great to have, son left notes attached to the TV screen. We brought a power strip and night light but used neither. We used the Mariner's TV clock as our clock and night light. It was on channel 13, was a black background with red letters just like a clock radio, just mute TV so you don't get the background music all night long. Bring lots of sunscreen, we went through 8 cans of the spray on kind, luckily we got the 2 packs at BJ's.

I pack a small travel sized can of Ozium air freshener for the bathroom (found in the auto section) It is very good at quickly overcoming odors. I use it to spray the cabin when we first arrive to get rid of any smoke smell or musty smells.

I also bring some of those individually packages hand wipes to take with me in ports. Handy for cleaning your hands before eating, etc. when washing isn't an option.

A small container of Purelle or other antibacterial gel to carry with me. I use it periodically during the day while out and about on the ship.

A couple of large ziploc bags - many uses but very good for packing damp bathing suits for the trip home or for dirty shoes.

If the ship has shower curtains - a handful of clothes pins to clip to the bottom of the curtain to keep it from wrapping around your legs.

We have an "ABSOLUTELY NO POOPING IN THE CABIN" rule to deal with the "odor" problem :p . :D Gotta find a bathroom on deck if you want to do #2!!! :D

I'm the guilty party here.

I bring one of those little Glack "stick ups" air fresheners (the kind that's flat and round and you twist to open it), and set it on the shelf under the sink. Works surprisingly well. Other necessary items for me:

"tap light" for the bathroom: pack it without the batteries so it doesn't go on in the luggage, but it's easy to find on the counter at night, and give a gentler light than the overheads. I've never found a night light that would plug into the bathroom outlet.

Febreeze: gets the cigarette smoke out of clothes after a long evening in a bar/casino, so the clothes don't stink up the cabin.

Alarm Clock: the wakeup call is all very well, but I need to see what time it is in my inside cabin when I wake up in the dark, and I don't want to have to turn on a light and look at the phone to do it.

IPod speakers: Nothing like a little Sinatra while getting ready for formal night.

A refillable water bottle: staying hydrated really helps you handle the sun / food / alcohol.

To get wrinkles out of light cotton and knits (like tshirts), bring along a travel-size spray bottle and fill it with water! No need to get the Downey anti-wrinkle stuff. Water works great. And I use it at home all the time :)

I will suggest that to DH but it probably wouldn't work. :D Everyone is told that they are to use it!!! Preferably before they open the door!!! :p

Actually I was very surprised at how well Ozium works. I found out about it on the CC boards. It is very strong so a tiny spray is all you need. I found it in vanilla scent. It will get rid of smoke smells and those nasty bathroom smells. The small cans are made for use in cars so they are found in the auto section. Beware of the original scent (Blue Can) though because it smells like a hospital which is what was made for.

Ewwww! I hope you were just kidding.

Why subject strangers to the smells and sounds that could be kept in private? It's one thing if you can't avoid doing those things in public, but if you can make a choice why deliberately go out of your way to make things unpleasant for others??? I hope there aren't too many who have the same philosophy on my next cruise. Sorry, but that's just my opinion.

No, I wasn't kidding :D . My sweetie would win the "National Pooping Playoffs" and he likes to do it at night  . So why should I be the only one having to suffer through that toxic mess  .

Why don't you buy the wonderful guy some Ozium then? I'm sure he would thank you for it. I sure do hope he never finds out you are telling the world how good he would be at winning a pooping contest. The poor guy would really be embarassed. Be nice to him.:)

Are they considered aerosol sprays? We took some to aruba a few weeks ago (and were not stopped at the airport) but we threw them away while in the security line on the way back because it was a $1500 fine for any spray cans in your luggage? I know you are only suppose to take pump spray hair spray and bug sprays but i didnt even think about the spray suntan loations..anyone know for sure?

The sunscreen was in our checked baggage not our carryons since they were over 3 ounces. I know of no restriction on aerosols in checked baggage, I just checked United's website and they are not on the list. We had all cans in one bag along with a can of air freshener and all made it through with no problems. Where did you see the restriction? My guess is that it had to do with things being carried on the plane.
