Everyone recommends raincoats as a must for cruising Alaska. I have lined jackets, windbreakers, and swishy pants that are 100% nylon on the outside. Will these work, or do I need to purchase and actual raincoat?

You can pick up a cheap rain poncho at a Dollar store-we have had ours for 2 years. Needed them on both Alaska cruises. Handy to have and take up very little space.

I bought heavy-duty ponchos at Wal-mart. I was glad we had them. The people wearing the Dollar Store type ponchos weren't staying as dry the day we were in Juneau. My other best buy before our cruise was a pair of waterproof Timberlands. They were nice enough to wear with khakis on casual nights in the dining rooms and comfortable enough to wear hiking.
