Home still off balance

Recommended Posts

Just back from splendour of the seas. We were a party of eight and all of us have felt dizzy and off balance like when you have had too much alcohol. We left the ship Friday and it is now Sunday. The seas were very calm, only one day with a bit of a swell. I have cruised 10 times before in force ten gales and also seas like mill ponds and never experienced this before. Has anyone else suffered this, if so how long did it last. We also noticed when we went ashore we kept knocking into each other, really weird feeling.

I used to get it, in fact each cruise I took it would get worse, I would feel really groggy and stagger around.... hoping I wouldn't have to turn around suddenly otherwise I'd lose my balance. The worst I had it lasted over 2 weeks and I just didn't feel well at all.

Then I started taking one Bonine (Meclizine) pill the night before I left the ship, and each night before bed for about 4-5 nights and Bingo..... never had the problem again. Try it.:)

The strange thing is when I am onboard the ship I barely feel any movement, but once I get home, whoa!!

I also have dizziness after cruising - I never experience sea sickness while onboard ship. I take Bonine the last day of the cruise and for a day or so after. It has helped tremendously with the "swaying".

We never had a problem that I can recall after a cruise, but one day while cruising, we had this suttle rocking motion, of the ship, nobody could walk a straight line, we all looked like we had been drinking. Everyone began laughing. In fact even the CD commented during a show, the only ones walking straight were the ones who had been drinking LOL.

Thanks cmsjab emdia43 reallyitsmema for your quick replies. my mother who is 80 rang me this morning really worried until i told her we all felt the same. Will try the tablets next time. Like all of you we never felt anything on the ship but a couple of times when we went ashore we felt woozy and kept bumping into each other. Have cruised Splendour before and 8 other ships and never had the problem. Also it is really weird that all of us were affected. Once again thanks for your reassurances, now we know that we havent all gone crazy.

I take Bonine during our cruise (start the night before) and after our last cruise I swayed for exactly 5 days after we got home. It doesn't make me feel sick or anything, but right about the 4th day I was a little concerned that it was still happening and I was worried I might really have something wrong with me. Then the next day it was gone, and it was kinda sad.

Ok I'll be waiting to hear from you. :D Come to think of it, let me first add, I do not drink, accidentally ordered a Long Island Ice Tea, thinking of course, well you know what I mean, I walked a straight line and down down the stairs of upper pool deck, so there maybe some truth to this.

I forgot to mention that the week of our cruise, I don't feel the swaying motion at all while in ports. It only hits me after we've gotten home. Is that how it is for everyone else?

Exactly- I was OK the day we left to go home, but the next day !!! it would come on and get really bad so I was holding onto walls. Ever since I started the Bonine treatment I haven't had any problem. Makes you sleep really well too,so you feel refreshed when you wake up.

I've had this before, but usually only lasts a day. However, I seemed to be experiencing it after FLYING to CA this summer (no cruise involved, unfortunately). For two days I had the "off-balance" feeling. I just assumed it was jet-lag... maybe in this case it was, but it certainly felt the same... I've also experienced it after very long Amtrak rides...

Bonine and Meclazine are esentially the same medication, both over the counter in the USA. See your pharmacist to get the Meclizine, as they usually have it in the pharmacy vs. on the shelf. Meclizine is much cheaper usually than Bonine, sometimes like 100 doses for around 5 bucks.

You and your family are definitely not alone! We came home from our 5 day cruise 7/2, and I would say this past week was probably the first time I felt back to "normal".

Went on first cruise 2 yrs ago, a 10 day, and I felt it when we got home really bad. Never felt it on the boat, maybe a little "swaying" on land, but when we got home...I literally felt like I was on the boat more than when I WAS on it! LOL. I contributed it to getting a really bad head cold at the end of the cruise, but it wasn't that...the cold went away, but the out of it and dizziness didn't for I would say a good 3 weeks.

I never had any problems before that cruise. Then last year, dh and I took a ferry (one that I've taken many, many times before) only across LI sound to Foxwoods Casino, and when I got home from that 3 day trip...felt it again...from the ferry! Very strange.

This time, our friends joined us on the cruise. When we all got home, dh, myself, and 4 friends all felt the same way. Not happy that we all get this strange feeling, but at least we know we are not alone:) It goes away...

Does anyone else get the swaying feeling even when turning the sink water on to do dishes? That's the best...sometimes I have to hold on to the counter just to stay "afloat"!

Well, hope you feel better soon. Oh yeah, we tried the drinking thing when we got home...it worked for the first couple, felt more balanced for awhile, then watchout! It catches up on ya;), more than it did on the ship...really fast:D

Haha, great. I have balance issues to begin with, without being on a ship! Can't wait 'til after my six-night cruise.... :D

I think I'll have to purchase a shirt with the Royal Caribbean logo on it to wear on my flight home, or they may think I've had some drinks and am too drunk to fly, LOL!! :p

Too funny! You just reminded me of the shirt my husband wore on the flight on our way home from the cruise, it says something like this: "I got Duvall faced on S*** Street in Key West" LOL...never even crossed our minds, what everyone must have thought when he was swaying!!!!

Of course, I waited til we got home to wear mine when we had those drinks I spoke of in an earlier post;)

P.S. I have balance issues to begin with also, didn't make it worse, nor better for that matter

We felt it a couple of times when we were walking in Mykonos and Corfu, thought it was the heat at the time as when we got back on the ship we were ok. We have all cruised lots of times but never had the sways before.
