Piton1 Posted July 22, 2007 #1 Share Posted July 22, 2007 I enjoy drinking GOOD beer. Our local beer distributor sells some imports. I would like to know what you all consider a good brew. If you have had the misfortune of drinking Budweiser and can use that on a scale of 0 to10 (Bud is a ZERO) I would appreciate it. I am planning on a cruise to the 'land down under' and I just want to be prepared for that day. And BTW this thread has nothing to do with the Pol Acker thread running on the Cunard board. But I do have one question which is.. does P&O give out cheap sparkling wine to the passengers? :) And a big Hello to FoundLove@Sea ;) Paul
LizCruising2007 Posted July 23, 2007 #2 Share Posted July 23, 2007 Hi, Having worked in clubs etc. I would have to say that the most popular beer would be VB (Victorian Bitter) and depending on which state you are in the other top selling ones are Fosters and XXXX (4X) - but if you're looking for top shelf you can't go past a Crown Lagar. Cheers! :)
MsMinx Posted July 23, 2007 #3 Share Posted July 23, 2007 I would rate both VB and XXXX as 0/10. I'm not a beer fan and I think it's because of those two lol. But that's just me. But Crown Lager isn't too bad and i'd probably rate it at 7/10. I do like dark beers like Guiness and Kilkenny but I don't believe you can get those on P&O ships. They might sell Guiness in a can but it's way better on tap. If you end up in Vanuatu my husband says their Tusker beer is fantastic and would probably give it an 8/10. He usually goes for Corona which would get his 10/10 :D Hope that helps?
icemaiden2310 Posted July 23, 2007 #4 Share Posted July 23, 2007 Me being a true aussie sheila I love a VB, but u must always ask for a schooner of VB otherwise u will get a Midi which is just not enough!

Hi Jo, I'm not a beer drinker at all - however, after working at various nightclubs and casino's etc over the years these were by far the top sellers so a lot of people must like them. Personally - if I did have a beer I would without a doubt choose Corona with a lime - yum!
CruiseKidz Posted July 23, 2007 #6 Share Posted July 23, 2007 My favourite beer, I love a cold one in summer just back from the beach is Heineken, 10/10 followed by Grolsch or Stella Artois. But if none of those are available I'll settle for a Crownie. Sorry VB, xxxx or Emu do not rate as a beer in my book and I could not ever consider drinking a beer from a can. CHEERS If you are a true beer connoisseur, the top half of NSWP's list is a good match. I have a particular liking for the James Squire golden & Tooheys Black. But like most others, once I have had a few, I will drink anything (well except Bud & Fosters). I recall that when Fosters sold here it was nicknamed "Love on the beach". Piton1 Posted July 24, 2007 Author #11 Share Posted July 24, 2007 Thanks everybody for the quick response. I plan on stopping at the beer distributor late Friday afternoon ( your early sat morning) to see what I can find from your suggestions. If still sober when you awake, I'll report in.;) Paul
spongerob Posted July 24, 2007 #12 Share Posted July 24, 2007 I recall that when Fosters sold here it was nicknamed "Love on the beach". Back in the day, when the warmest days of summer in Canada (where I grew up) were ushered in with the annual brewery strike, our provincial premier ammended the laws and allowed the import of American beer. Drinking Bud and Rainier soon became known as "Making love in a canoe." It's a sad state of affairs in this country. Many think Foster's is beeah. At least if you look hard enough you might be able to find Toohey's here. The Aussies are not well represented on our beer shelves. Sad to say. Brushtail Posted July 24, 2007 #14 Share Posted July 24, 2007 'Making Love in a Canoe' is definitely not an Aussie custom. It would be inclined to tip........ :D

Piton1 Posted July 27, 2007 Author #17 Share Posted July 27, 2007 We stopped at the beer distributor on the way home from work this afternoon. They have a fairly large selection of imports ( Europe ) but none from Australia. . So I asked if they could order some and was told yes.:) I was told they can probably get Coopers and Carlton for me. In the meantime I'll drink the Bass Ale I picked up.:D Paul
NSWP Posted July 28, 2007 #18 Share Posted July 28, 2007 Carlton and Coopers make good beers. Bass Ale is quite good, pom (Brit) amber ale, they sell it on Princess Ships for around $4 (US) plus the 15% automatic wage subsidy surcharge (had to get that bit in.) I reckon the beer is never cold enough on the ships, so I get tw cans or bottles in an ice bucket, the staff think I am odd, but we Aussies have to have our lagers FROSTY. Cheers, beer o'clock right now. Les

If you're cruising down here on P&O you can drink the 'Apple Isle' products, Cascade or James Boag. Both a darn good drop:)Last year the latter won 'best beer of all' in the Europe Beer Comp. Steer clear of VB & xxxx (even if you're drunk!) Cheers

I can even get the Boddingtons in Skagway in Alaska (I work on ships) and if I can get it here, you should be able to get it anywhere.
