People cancelling cruises is no different than a restaurant deciding to go smoke free. Smokers are up in arms " I'll never step foot in there again" Well, after things calm down, they come back. I'm sure this will be the same way. I'm happy to see this change and only hope more areas of the ships will become nonsmoking.Too bad we nonsmokers/smokers just can't be considerate of each other.

 

I think it quite considerate of non smokers to demand that the ships become entirely smoke free.:rolleyes:

 

And most restaurants didn't "decide" to go smoke free. They had no choice in the matter. The government decided for them.

As a non-smoker the new rule pleases me. Cigarette smoke triggers terrible headaches when I'm exposed directly to it. When I was on the Sovereign in May and attempted to go in the casino the smoke was so bad that I couldn't stay and while sitting at the pool (in the non-smoking section!) I had very rude fellow cruisers whose smoke blew right into my face. I was the one who was constantly put out to accomodate the smokers. I say way to go RCCI!! Also to you smokers out there who throw your cigarette butts on the ground and any other place they don't belong...the world is not your ash tray!

 

You DO realize that the new rule that you are cheering for will actually INCREASE the amount of smokers in the areas like the casino...right? If they can't smoke in their room, they WILL smoke somewhere...probably near you.

Not to mention when a restaurant goes smoke free...you are only in the restaurant for an hour...not a week. ;)

I'm a non-smoker who really really really hates smoke - BUT while I don't want to be around it if I can help it, I'd rather you be able to smoke in your cabins (preferrably in designated smoking cabins - just like hotels - if all the non-smoking ones are taken I know I may end up with a smokey smelling cabin BUT I have not ever had a problem with my cabin on a cruise ship (not that I've done many yet)) then on the balconies - because the last time I went and had a balcony it just wasn't fun to be out there with the smoke I could smell. I know at home that bars will be smokey, and in Vegas casinos are as well - so I go in but get out when I need fresh air - on a ship it can be hard for non-smokers because many of the environments can seem more contained and smoke filled but honestly it didn't bug me any more then going out for a night and still i have yet to find anything as bad as Vegas casinos! Anyway, while I would love more things non-smoking I do fear this policy will make things worse and not better.

How many people will be drawn to RCCL in the future because they want to know that their cabin will not smell from stale smoke?

 

uh... since over 75% of the U.S. population are not smokers, one can imagine a good number!

I just read the majority of this thread. As I stated yesterday (amidst all the bickering and the acting so silly over this topic), its NOT just RCCL that is going in this direction.

 

If one choses to cruise on another line, this is one's choice. Soon, one will be chosing from pretty much the same rules on all cruise lines. Its just a matter of it all going into place.

 

I think some of these posts are pretty darn funny....lol

Can't ya just wait until RCI decides that too many people are drinking far too much alcohol and they put the brakes on that? They are already stopping people from bringing it on the ship and people are having a cow over it.:p People are worrying about sniffing some cigarette smoke and yet they are willing to try and smuggle alcohol aboard in mouthwash bottles.:rolleyes: Whose addiction were we talking about?

I am probably not the right person to respond to this thread, but I will.

 

I have been on ships where smoking was permitted in the staterooms. As a smoker, I still chose to NOT smoke in my stateroom. When we had an ocean view room, we went up to the outside decks to smoke. No big deal. All of our cruises after that have been in balcony rooms, and we always smoke on the balcony and NEVER in the room. Or, we just go to the pool deck or designated smoking areas to smoke. There are a lot more places for the smokers to smoke than there are for the non-smokers to get away from it. And it is about time that they give the non-smokers more options. Yes, it would have been beneficial to make one half of the cabins smoking, and the other not. BUt it probably does also cost them a lot of money to keep the smell of smoke out of rooms. When California went no smoking in all restaurants and bars, there was a 'stink' for a while, but people adapted. They will on the cruise ships too. I guarantee you for every smoker than cancels, they will have 2-3 times that amount book RCI because of the new policy. While it does make it harder for those in interior/ocean view rooms to find a place to smoke, it is not the end of the world. Aren't you all the people who say that you only use your room for a place to sleep anyway? Do you smoke in your sleep? ;) This will all die down, and before long, you won't even remember a time that you COULD smoke in your staterooms. Westin has made all their rooms non-smoking in all of North America, and they still manage to sell out. I imagine it won't have a negative impact on RCI at all. And it is only a matter of time before all cruise lines follow in their footsteps. They do take polls and do a lot of market research before they decide on these things. And this is obviously what the majority of cruisers were asking for. I am sure they did studies and realize they may lose some cruisers because of it, but the pros obviously out weighed the cons.

and if you knew me, you'd know that. But WHY would I want to go back to RCCL when I can cruise Carnival and Princess? I have been on both of these before and while RCCL WAS my favorite, I had a very good time on both of these other lines. RCCL must have thought they corner the market when they implemented this new rule. I'm sorry but they don't! If I can choose to go elsewhere and make my own choices about the smoking issue, you betcha I'm switching lines. All lines have rules about where you can and can not smoke and I follow those rules but bringing it into my cabin, is going to far whether I personally choose to smoke in there or not.

 

RCCL may do just fine with this decision but they will not do it with the support of my hard earned cash....That's my choice and my decision but I do know how you feel when you say that it's too bad smokers AND non-smokers can't just be considerate of wach other.

So if only 30% smoke on a cruise and they implement a smoking policy.....Just maybe more NON-SMOKERS would book a cruise due to a more smoke-free environment. Not knocking smokers but I am sure the food tastes better when you quit!!!

 

 

Remember the Carnival Paradise? Completely non smoking. IF you even had an unopened pack of cigarettes, they threw you off at the next port.

I am sure every non smoker posting has sailed that non-smoking ship, right?

It is no longer a non smoking ship..too unprofitable.

I cancelled and where do you get your numbers from? Do you work for RCCL? According to the rep I spoke with today, they have been extremely busy with cancellations today and you can bet that it wasn't a coincidence. It is directly related to the new policy!

 

Besides, I'm not saying that smokers will make a difference! That remains to be seen.......Maybe and maybe not......I only speak for myself and my vacation dollars. RCCL did not resolve the smoking issue for the benefit of all of their paying customers so why would I want to continue to patronize their corporation when I can go to another line, continue to be the courteous smoker that I am, and be allowed the choice of if I wish to smoke inside my stateroom or not?

And Carnival Paradise had been "testing" a non smoking casino on some of it's trips. I think it was either the 4 dayer or the 3 dayer at the beginning of this year. Did all of the non smokers go racing over this year to the Carnival Paradise? :confused:

 

If it was such a huge success, Carnival would have implemented it fleetwide.

I think that was about the most ridiculous thing I have ever read before in my life. The OP should probably not be allowed to have a balcony as I am not sure they have enough sense not to fall off.

Actually this is pretty funny! Do you think that we will now read threads on how to sneak a smoke in the cabins right along with the thousands of posts and threads we've read on how to smuggle booze? I remember seeing pics on here of booze that was successfully smuggled into cabins. Maybe we'll see pics of people relaxing on their sofa's with the balcony door open. I wonder how many of the people on here are against smokers but are all for smuggling booze?! :D Maybe they can now give people tips on how to sneak a cig. Should be entertaining reading over the winter:D
