Hamburg to Berlin on Train

Recommended Posts

Has anyone gone on the train to Berlin from Hamburg?

No, but I have done some train travel in Germany and always found it easy and pleasant.

You can do the trip either on a ICE train - which requires payment of a supplement - or a EC train which I can't recall as to whether there is a supplement. The ICE are fast trains, and I'd recommend that. However if the EC is cheaper you won't find it unpleasant.

The ICE takes about 1:30h, the EC 2 hours.

Connections can be found at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

If you want to travel over the next couple of weeks be aware that there might be a train strike by engine drivers demanding at least 31% wage increase.

OMG I was going to say "You know you are on the right train in Germany as it arrives and leaves on time" Unlike the UK lol

We did exactly this while on our July 2005 Golden Princess cruise and it was really easy. I actually called the rail line directly in Germany and ordered the tickets (the deal was even better over the phone than online) and had the tickets in hand. We took a cab from the port to the train station and took the train into Berlin, it was 1.5 hours. We did book first class which was great as did many others from our cruise critic group. It was a wonderful way to spend the day.

Meanwhile the sales policy of German Railways has changed:

Internet is cheaper than ticket booth or phone line.

There are specials for 1st class for August.

But the earlier you book and the more flexibel you are and the more persons you are the higher are the savings.

N.B. No strikes on German Railways until Aug 27, 2007.
