Traveler's checks

The only limit may be if they run out of greenbacks ... but the staff is pretty resourceful and likely prints more in a back office.

Indeed, we've cashed $50 and $100 trav chex onboard no problem. Perhaps getting them in denominations of $100 or less would make sense for cash and carry purposes.

Yes, you can. As for a limit I never heard of one, but you wouldn't want to get a large number of them cashed at one time anyway or there wouldn't be a reason to bring them instead of cash. :D

I believe there is a $1000 per day per person limit, but I may have this mixed up with the Credit card advance

I don't understand why anybody uses traveler's checks anymore. They're even more outdated than, well, checks (which I also don't see the need for). Take your ATM card.

I feel better bringing traveler's cheques, as opposed to large amounts of cash. I cash them at the front desk for casino money and for tips. I need USD for these purposes and am not usually traveling where the ATM machines dispense USD. I don't use them to make onshore purchases or cash them at local banks -- too much of a hassle.

:) Hard to believe there are still a few of us who don't do EVERYTHING on line. We do not pay bills on line so still need those old fashioned paper checkbooks. ;) My husband certainly needs paper checks in his office. Even needs to receive bank statements monthly. :)

I have never used an ATM. Don't need it. I have a card for a 'just in case emergency' but have, to date, never used it. DH uses one but he has more call to do so than me.

I've managed to travel all over the place and get my bills paid the 'old fashioned way'. Still works!@! Shocking. :D

Thanks for the info. I still find traveler's checks the most convenient if they can be readily cashed - no need to "find" an ATM and/or risk having the card rejected or "eaten"!! I have traveled with a friend who relies heavily on ATMs and have had to front her money on more than one occasion!

We took travelers checks since we get them for free, and I don't like paying extra for non system ATM's. Had no problem using them anywhere like grocery stores and other small purchases. Used credit card for most things. Only problem is using the left over ones when we get home. Most stores don't know what they are or how to process them. Had one the other day have to call Amer Exp to verify before cashing. Said they have lots of phonies with these and only take Amer Exp as a result.

You'll have no problem cashing AmEx travelers checks on an HAL ship.

Aye, also AAA travelers checks are good too, as they are backed by Visa. We use the AAA travelers checks because they are free to AAA members, whereas the AmEx ones cost extra no matter where you get them.

We use of Capital one credit card wherever possible & also Travelers Checks..In many places your can't find ATM's which dispense USD, especially some of the places we travel to (Amazon ports)..We don't pay for our Travelers checks & also don't like carrying large amounts of cash...We purchase them in increments of $50 & cash them on the ship..If they are lost or stolen they are immediately replaced..

Many times we return with left over Travelers checks..We can either use them for our next trip or if it will be a long time between trips, in our Supermarket..

We get AmEx checks at no charge.

When we use AmEx checks, we select that brand because they are immediately replaceable worldwide if lost.

Most other checks will be replaced, at a later date.....meaning, in many cases, after you have returned home. If they are lost while you are traveling, you want the replacements immediately so as to not leave you without funds.

We are fortunate that our bank provides AmEx checks-for-two with no service fee ... handy if we have leftovers (and we always do) because either of us can cash any/all of the checks.

And, yes, we also live in the dark ages ... pay our bills with real paper checks and do not have an ATM card at all.

:) Exactly, Betty. Works for us. I keep a few left over ones in my purse for 'impulse or emergency' money after we return home.
