coop2 Posted September 11, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 11, 2007 Anyone done this to go to the port???
cruiseluv Posted September 11, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 11, 2007 We did it in reverse a few weeks ago. The train takes approx. 1.5 hrs. I think the regular fare is around 27 pounds PP but we got a special "Group saver" fare of 55 pounds total for 4 adults and 1 child.
Globaliser Posted September 11, 2007 #3 Share Posted September 11, 2007 Please have a look on the British Isles forum, where this is probably about the most common question.
Paul S Posted September 11, 2007 #4 Share Posted September 11, 2007 coop2, You have posted on the wrong board! You will usually get a better response posting on the British Isles/Western Europe board. However, you catch the train from London Waterloo station to Southampton station then take a taxi. Train fares vary depending on how far ahead you book and the time of day. You can check fares and times at http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk. coop2 Posted September 11, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted September 11, 2007 Do I get a ticket for Southampton CENTRAL? Will going first class give me more room for my luggage? Thanks!
Globaliser Posted September 11, 2007 #6 Share Posted September 11, 2007 Yes, Southampton Central is the station you need. First class will probably give you a bit more luggage space, although luggage on these commuter trains usually involves a bit of improvisation anyway. signman Posted September 11, 2007 #8 Share Posted September 11, 2007 Take National Express coach. Cheaper and no stairs to negotiate.
Globaliser Posted September 11, 2007 #9 Share Posted September 11, 2007 No stairs to negotiate if you take the train. But the coach involves several steps up from ground level to the seating, if that matters. The coach also takes twice as long as the train, and is less frequent. cruiseluv Posted September 11, 2007 #10 Share Posted September 11, 2007 I agree with Globaliser. The train was very easy. We were in Regular class and we put our lugagge (which was quite a bit!) in an area at the entrance to the train car, near were we sat. I'm sure it depends what time you take the train, but when we took it it was almost empty
kimberley Posted September 12, 2007 #11 Share Posted September 12, 2007 Try looking on http://www.thetrainline.com. They carry all the times and prices and you can book direct with them for any train ticket in the UK. You can only book three months in advance. I have just checked a sample date it comes back as £27.40 second class travel and £55.50 for first. All the carriages have places to put your lugguage. The train travel time is approx 1.26hours. Hope this has been helpful Kimberley
