First off, what does your optometrist say about you going on this cruise?

What do your doctors advise? I think they can answer best..

Do you have travel insurance?

If You are travelling alone, I would personally try and cancel the cruise and hopefully You have insurance. If You have someone traveling with You and you don't have to drive etc. I would first ask My Doctor if it was OK to go. Can the Dr. see any complications developing down the line. I wouldn't want to be on a ship if complications could possibly occur. I know how you feel, but there is always a cruise to go on in 6 months time. Give it a lot of thought. You will make the right decision. Good Luck and feel better

real soon. IKE

Yeah I agree with everyone else. . see what your doctor says and if someone else is going with you I would still go. . too big of a trip to miss. I have been blind in one eye since I was 3 so i've been seeing with only 1 eye for 24 years. . so I don't know what it was like to see out of both eyes as you have. . so it will be an adjustment but I do everything anyone with 2 eyes does. . but again see what your eye doctor says. . and then go from there.

My sister has petit mal and we cant predict when. We still cruise. My mom was worried about her cruising but Im a doer. We just do our best. If she is having petit mal we sit in the cabin a lot, its still a cruise, or we sat up in the buffet area when everyone else was out that night enjoying Key West.

We also brought patches in case she got sea sick. She did!!! But the patches work, the doctor has to give you a prescription for them.

If doctors agree and you're not traveling alone by all means go!!! There are lots of things to do that don't take a lot of activity. It will give you something to look forward to as you recouperate.

You'll also be amazed at how fast your body and brain will adjust to this condition.

God bless you and get well soon.

Well I born with only seeing from my left eye. I think I only see 10-20% out of my right eye. I do everything I'm interested in. I drive, fly an airplane & scuba dive. So I'm not limited by just seeing out of one eye.

As for canceling you may want to give your body time to adjust to the change. Personally I don't see a problem with it. But then again I don't know what the difference would be if I could see from both.

Have you been diagnosed with anything? This sounds exactly like what I was going through a few years ago...look up Pseudo Tumor Cerebri and see if your symptoms are similar. Medication and if it gets too bad a spinal tap could relieve your symptoms...IF it's the case. PTC is very rare, so check it out, you may have a light at the end of the tunnel! :o

A cruise would be great because you can just relax and enjoy! Someone else does everything for you!!

Good luck!!

First my thoughts and prayers are with you.....

If you are not traveling alone, I would cruise. You can do whatever you would do at home on the ship. You could sail and relax and never even have to leave the ship. It may be what you need to heal and really reflect on what your options are. If you decide to go, I would phone ahead and inform the ship of your concerns; they will make notes and notify the Dr. onboard.

I cruised with my mom who had just found out about a terminal illness, we thought about canceling the cruise but she wanted to do whatever she could prior to anything happening or any decisions being made. She had a wonderful time and I am happy to say that she is coming up on her fourth cruise in January.

Whatever you decide - I hope that all works out for you.

One eye shouldnt stop you from cruising..heck, on my last cruise there was a blind man with a guide dog. I talked to him in the elevator and he was having a great time.

If your doctors give the "go ahead" GO! You have one good eye...you can see what you are experiancing! Imagine going on a cruise blind! I have a retired blind couple as clients/friends (I see them once a week) that went on an Alaskan cruise that they paid dearly for, I say dearly as they had to pay for their neice and husband (mid 40's) to accompany them, simply because they weren't "comfortable enough" to be "such a bother" on the stewards and other staff to assist them with their special needs. Yes they brought the dogs too! They ended up having a wonderful time, tipped Phat, and are planning a cruise to Panama in 2009 by themselves and the dogs! (The neice and husband went wild since they were not so in need of their "services" as much as they predicted as the staff were MORE than accomodating. This particular couple amazes me, as they travel at least 3 times a year!!!!! One that doesnt know, kinda sits back and says why would they even bother with the expense? But if you sit on holiday anywhere whether it be cruising or on land..sitting in your chair by the view, beach, or on Lido, ...and shut your eyes for a few minutes and ask yourself, is this great or what? I think we are all blind on holiday at one point or another! Enough said....back to the OP.....gatta go unless the good doctor says no, if there could be complications involved make sure that the medical services on board will be able to assist you if need be. Im liking the pirate post..... ey ey mate...pun intended!

PS did you know that all fruit and veggies in a can make a distinguished sound when shaken? Crazy eh?

PSS I would like to think that it does not matter, but they did sail on Princess, and are going back to Panama on her simply because of the service. Im sure that Carnival would be accomodating, my heart is with Carnival dont get me wrong....but.... well... would Carnival be as accomodating to a blind couple and two dogs? (with a balcony mind you....the poop deck..)...oyyyy.....granted Ive picked up sh!t for $75 bux an hour, will a Carni do as much, would the Matride do as much, they HAD to have met 75% of the staff on board this cruise, in his own words "they all fell in love with the dogs....it was all about the dogs....that is why we got such great welcome and service!"

....sorry too long....but am greatful to have my sight...Ive known this couple for 17 years....they are truly remarkable! They humble me every week! IMHO I would rather sea than hear.....again pun intended!

yes, I do have insurance. as for the dr.s they all 3 differ. PCP says do what u feel like I'll back u. optomitrist says that it could be months before it gets stablized and that the sight may never get better, also the vertigo will not dissapate untill the sight stablelizes. She says could be mopnths before I can drive or go back to work. The neurologist says now that the spinal fluid leak is stopped and that fluid level is going back up that he sees no reason for it to happen again (as long as I do not have any other steroid injections) or get worse. so, I have 2 that are ok w/it & 1 that is not positive about much.

Are you traveling with someone who would be at your side most of the time? With help, I think you would be ok. Life is too short to miss out on opportunities if you can. Sorry about your trouble.

Yes, I am traveling with dear friend of 25+ years. we both have wanted to cruise for more years than we care to count. She would be wonderful as a caretaker so to speak but would hate to tie her down. she would not mind I know.

Yes, I have. On mon aug 27 I had a steroid injection in my neck to help with disk problems. by thrus I could not sit up w/out head exploding, come sun I started seeing double & triple. mon (labor day) went into hosp. they found that the injection did not close off & my spinal fluid had been leaking for a week. the low spinal fluid caused my brain to lean against my optic nerve & caused the damage. it is called 6TH nerve palsy.

Majority rules!! Also, since the root of this problem is neurological, I would put more weight on what he/she says. I traveled once with a slipped cervical disk, it was starting to heal, but had the possiblity of further rupture, which could have caused total paralysis. My doctors were totally cool with my traveling (to Mexico). DH was a little nervous, but I'm stubborn, so I went. I recovered more in the week I spent on the beach drinking Coronas that I in a month here at home. It was WONDERFUL! Yes, I was still in pain and moderately uncomfortable, but I was on vacation, and it made it so much easier to deal with.

I say go, especially if you are the kind of person that really gets a lot of relaxation and therapy from a vacation. (I know for some people travel can be stressful and is not as therapuetic)

LOL. u bet. I had to go by work yesterday after visit w/optomitrist. She put a cloth patch that sticks to skin on. I scarced the hell out of folks at work & had 1 girl crying. maybe I do need to go w/a patch where folks do not know me. Then on the other side one lady offered to help me out w/ a better looking patch. she is so talented on anything crafty. she said if I could get an extra patch made of cloth the she would try to paint a hummingbird on it for me to wear!!

PSS. I collect & am crazy about hummingbirds.

I had a different medical problem several years ago, but the symptoms were very similar to yours. I saw triple images in my left eye, so I understand your concern. However, the brain is a wonderful organ! If you are willing to use a patch on the "bad" eye, you will adjust to vision in one eye quickly. The only thing is be aware that your depth preception will be off some. It will not take away from the enjoyment of your trip. I like the idea of using some "decorated" patches. (I also love anything to do with hummingbirds!). Have fun with it! I hope that your medical condition improves in the near future. Go ahead and enjoy your cruise!
